one of the weirdest things that people believe on a website where the collective mood changes every thirty-six hours is that events completely unknown to 60% of the population, where 90% have the facts wrong, will have persistent effects eighteen months later

i think a lot of us if plucked off the street and sworn in as a senator would do a modestly better job than a lot of our incumbents
all of these people live in a comfortable room-temperature fog of steakhouse dinners, galas held in their honor, and important decisions prechewed for them and fed to them by adoring but interchangable young people selected to be as inoffensive to them as possible by their chiefs of staff.

i have twice called the police because of an imminent suicide risk and both times i drove to where the risk was so that i would be the first person the police encountered
its also,,,, the resources other than police for a suicidal person at risk are ____________
Other than a few cities there aren’t other response teams
“Just talk the person down, try a crisis line“ Ok bud sure thing

We're officially live. It's incredibly important to have a real record of how our public servants are behaving and this database will be a powerful tool for researchers, reporters, and ordinary Americans.

chuck schumer is a very nice man and even his personal, soul-deep belief that the only reason someone could oppose israel is antisemitism only manifests as mild annoyance. i don't know that he actually believes in evil.
i think "chuck schumer personally does not really think that donald trump is his enemy for this reason" is a perfectly respectable theory

there is no reason that AIPAC would want to buy an end to the shutdown, but unconditional support for Israel as it plunges off a right-wing cliff and chronic Senate brain in the face of fascism are both kinds of toxic nostalgia which powerful, elderly morons wrap around themselves like warm blankets

if anybody needs to borrow the postholer let me know. it's not a very big one, but it was cheaper to buy a battery powered postholer than to rent a gas one for a day, three years ago, so i've got a ryobi battery postholer in the woodloft.

you cannot create a viable third party without changing the constitution.
to change the constitution, you need control of one of the major political parties, at minimum.
anyone refusing to accept this is a fucking child i'm tired of entertaining.

you’d have to rebuild so much financial, political, and legal infrastructure, and that’s a lot of capital to expend when you can just directly choose your nominees for the democratic party in a primary. this is pretty straightforward imo
Parties are shells that are continuously remade. Compare Ds/Rs in 1868, 1904, 1932, 1972, & today on class, race, gender, immigration, & religion.
Most of us want more parties, but that isn’t* viable w/o proportional representation.
Since 1972, all nominees are directly chosen by voters. Do that.

"The best way to solve these problems is to leave the Democrats behind!"
"No, you can solve these problems more effectively by taking over the Democrats"
"LOOK AT WHO LOVES THE DEMOCRATS!"

I am at a company that works for other companies, and I recall when we started they made a big deal about never working for tobacco companies (which was an easy feat in our field), now we have Imperial Tobacco and Amway on our client list…
there was an incredibly stark change at my job between 2023 and 2025. just absolutely day and night.
i dont think there’s ever been a point where corporate america has had a sincere sense of morality but it is probably a sign of the times that the culture at most major firms does not even pretend to encourage ethical behavior anymore. the transformation is really stark in tech.

If you can legally get your 2026 household MAGI income BELOW that level, you should be eligible for tax credits...which could still be substantial even if not as generous as they are in 2025.
I'll be writing more about this soon.
