It is generally considered good scientific practice to define a thing before making sweeping statements about characterizing the health effects of that thing.
The evidence that ultra-processed foods are bad for us is piling up. But efforts to reduce their role in our diets face a big hurdle: experts can't agree on what they are and which to target. n.pr/4qMrN7P

said before, will say again: two things I miss about the pre-Trump era are (1) Nate Silver's writing about baseball and (2) Nate Silver's NOT writing about anything else

I'm sure the usual suspects will glom onto this as "feckless Dems, ideologically incoherent as usual" but like, you don't become the oldest continuously existing political party in the world by *shrinking* the tent

Murc's law works always and exclusively to the benefit of Republicans and that's why it's bad.
The Democrats are not at fault for anything going badly in your life right now.

I'm sorry are you Jon Stewart on Crossfire twenty years ago? Or do you want to come back to this planet in the year 2025? The overwhelming gripe is people think you're spineless, not that your DW-NOMINATE score isn't bipartisan enough

I think there are some people on this website who are not grasping that either outcome on this thing probably condemns to death or permanent misery a six- or seven-digit number of people who would not have died or become permanently immiserated under the other outcome

Maybe I'm reading too much into this particular set of political tea leaves, but this feels to me like the kind of rupture that precipitates a realignment. At the congressional level, both parties seem divided and rudderless to an extent not previously seen in my lifetime.
Either way, so many Dems... the bulk of the Senate caucus, House leadership, governors, etc.,... all quickly throwing down the gauntlet with such open unrestrained attacks on any Dems who cave is new. It wasn't like that in March, not nearly as loud and widespread and immediate, much more base-only.

but James, have you considered that the taxi that brings burritos (and other fully prepared meals) directly to my home costs me more than zero cents at the margin and we therefore have no choice but to destroy modernity
You spend approximately a quarter of what your ancestors spend on food in 1947 and the food quality is far superior and more varied. cepr.net/publications...

Schumer clinging to the leadership by defecting to the Fight column at the last possible second would be a very funny (derogatory) outcome

I believe Adelita Grijalva will take her seat in the United States House of Representatives absolutely no later than January 3, 2027, actually
Grijalva will never be seated. Guaranteed. That's over too. We had a chance to do this at the ballot box and Congress just did a Bill Buckner and now we're all fucked

I don't think any single statistic has ever done more to shape my view of the world than this one:
More than half of all human beings who have ever been born did not live to celebrate their 20th birthday.
More than half of all human beings who have ever been born did not live to celebrate their 20th birthday.
one of the greatest struggles for any left-wing political movement in the modern west (and increasingly beyond) is how much of the sheer abject deprivation, fear, and often fatal dangers that were inextricable to the lives of any but the wealth just...barely exist anymore
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

I do wonder this but it causes me less anxiety and dread with each passing second that the shutdown continues.
you have to wonder what sort of legislation the House tries sending to the Senate if they kill the filibuster. do they finally get around to privatizing social security like during Bush?

Sabrina Carpenter is exceptionally attractive, and straight men who claim not to think so are almost universally doing that because they are furious that her work relentlessly mocks mediocre straight men.
Something I find very funny is people periodically talking about how Sabrina Carpenter "isn't hot to men", as if heterosexual male fans are the audience her career depends on. I thought we had all understood 'women mostly dress up for themselves, or for women' but looks like we've forgotten again.
