i recognize that the median length of Normal Men is probably about ninety minutes, so there are some things I need to work out with myself, but I think this is almost correct:

the two optimal lengths for a podcast are 1) 45 minutes and 2) infinity.
also, no podcast (audio only) needs to be longer than an hour. maybe an hour and a half, but even then only if it’s the exception to an established norm.

drunk driving is extremely bad and we should try to design social patterns and travel norms in ways that reduce it
I have a bunch of intersecting thoughts here but basically 1) excessive alcohol consumption is an urban activity, 2) we shouldn’t legalize drunk driving and 3) we should more heavily penalize parents whose kids abuse alcohol in such a drastic fashion.

one way to sidestep the whole thorny issue is to lean into speciesism- your duties to your fellow man do not depend on their ensoulment or their sentience or their capabilities, just on the fact that they’re wearing your team’s jersey, as it were
i think this is a pretty good specification of what one of the problems with the "positing a soul" argument is. i think that the problem is closer to "making a claim that the soul has a precise technical specification, and that claim pointing to nothing."
AI criticism is rapidly careening towards a deranged cynicism about technology as a whole and meanwhile the boosters just dismiss every argument as “positing a soul” (God forbid!) or whatever and do the “it’s not my job to educate you” thing. It just sucks all around.

I’m not super wild about any version of the “just bribe people” approach to elections, including the versions you like, but to the extent that it’s legal (tbd) and effective (tbd) we have to learn how to play the game

AI will fix this
will also add - yes, this is my personal crusade - that turning podcasts into videos implicitly asks women to once again make more effort than men, as the bar for "camera-ready" for one gender is obviously higher than for the other
‘Painful to hear!’ How podcasts’ rush to video is turning them into dreadful listens

I think part of it is that it’s difficult and/or boring to talk about good spatial filmmaking, even though people really seem to like good spatial filmmaking (see also: John Wick)
Avatar’s cultural relevance discourse is an expression of slop anxiety, the worry that most people don’t actually want something interesting like you do, and you know what? It’s fine if they don’t. Cool stuff still gets made and you get to enjoy it.

the reason you get a bunch of these “people thinking about leaving” pieces but then nobody much leaves isn’t sinister imo.

it’s that it’s very very easy to think about moving, but actually moving is an enormous pain in the ass
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

Last Sunday’s episode will go up Monday morning and we’ll be back to the usual “approximately Wednesday, probably” cadence after that.

the promise of America, to Miller, is that anyone might transcend the circumstances of their ancestry to become a Nazi
Relatedly, we obtained an unpublished history of Stephen Miller's ancestors' immigration to the US, written by his grandmother. People like them were attacked in terms very similar to the ones Miller and MAGA use about today's immigrants:

is there anybody even denying that the pardons are paid for or do we just kind of all accept this now?
GOP operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, convicted election fraudsters, were paid $960,000 in the second quarter to secure a pardon for a former nursing-home operator who defrauded the government of $38 million. Trump pardoned the man, Joseph Schwartz, last month.
Inside the New Fast Track to a Presidential Pardon
Even some of the president’s closest advisers have been surprised by a number of the recent series of pardons.

Looks like Avatar's got a good shot at a $2 billion total globally when all is said and done. It's arguably a more bankable franchise than the Avengers at this point.

I really thought the Nigeria stuff was just saber-rattling
sorta thought the whole point of pressuring Venezuela and Nigeria is that doing so elevates oil prices a bit but not enough to get the Permian going, thus making Russia and KSA happy.
