This is the same group of people who wrote into a must pass bill a mid six figures taxpayer funded slush fund for themselves in case someone beat the legal moat they also wrote in to avoid prosecution- these are not people who are going to impeach - they don’t care what it means for you/the country

They aren’t going to impeach b/c 1) they don’t think he’s wrong on this 2) they don’t actually care if they are included esp if it will fuck w/ their days off 3) if they have to start enforcing laws it puts them all at risk and they aren’t going to do that 4) no one is pushing them hard enough on 3

I’m not sure what other conclusions we are meant to draw from a news broadcast anchored by someone who has had unhinged racist interviews on national television then opting to lead with America First as a newly issued guiding belief, but none of the ones I have are good

let’s not pretend there are loud paragons of liberal democracy out there counter programming & making distinctions clear - instead the complete lack of this has made space for reinterpretation of old ideas & people don’t have memory of the outcomes

I would humbly suggest based on some of the discourse today that political terminology can change in common meaning over time and frequently political science is well behind the curve on this - a fact which should be easier to understand after a decade of Trumpism if nothing else

I do agree with the core thesis here - Mamdani doesn’t really have some other ambition he is known to be beholden to and it opens up a lot more space to actually accomplish something which probably triggers both the oligarchs & the strivers
Too much of US politics is dominated by the (silly but powerful) warping force that “You might be president someday!” It’s not possible for Mamdani—and that opens up space for a political imagination inaccessible to most by the the new mayor and his constituents lithub.com/why-its-a-go...
