there's a long understanding of certain disasters overriding immediate conflict, too. during Monte Cassino - an incredibly hard-fought and bloody battle - fighting stopped at least once when troops were buried in the collapse of a building and both sides helped dig the buried men out
And look, I say this as someone that has no problems with going after troops that are retreating—they're legitimate targets. But as quite a few people have pointed out (and it isn't an area I really know), being shipwrecked has a lengthy legal history of making you a protected class.

So like, I’m to believe the boat that had just been hit with a missile, all but two people on it killed, was a) still seaworthy, and b) once flipped back over would still be loaded with viable loads of drugs? Gimme a fuckin break.
Q: What did you see in the second strike?

Cotton: "I saw two survivors trying to flip a boat -- loaded with drugs, bound for the United States -- back over, so they could stay in the fight."

The pipe bomb suspect getting arrested by this dumbshit iteration of the FBI after 5 years just proves even more that the people in power over the last few years cared so little about getting to the bottom of the attempted coup of January 6th and just wanted to move on and hope things worked out.

You aren’t going to believe this. But there’s an important distinction between detaining someone as a law enforcement action in an interdiction and summarily killing them.
If the US Coast Guard stops a ship in international waters and seizes their cocaine, is that a war crime? The ship has not done anything illegal. Should we prosecute the Coast Guard Captain for piracy?

The dangerous thing here is that this was the point. It's probably not the case that they're going to declare all vaccines null and void and try to remove them entirely (because even though they're lunatics, they all know what a measles outbreak would do to their careers)
ACIP is no longer a legitimate scientific body.

Period.

This is a goat rodeo of radical anti-vaxxers.

One of the lowest points in US history - the president going on unhinged white supremacist rants in public appearance after public appearance, targeting a specific ethnic group - but because it’s Trump our political class is incapable of perceiving what it is and reacting appropriately
Trump: "It’s a hellhole right now. And those Somalians should be out of here. They've destroyed our country. And all they do is complain, complain, complain. You have her. She’s always talking about the Constitution provides me with – go back to your own country and figure out your constitution."

It's pretty obvious what's going to happen here.

Trump is going to "antitrust" his way toward making sure only Larry Ellison can acquire WB

Meanwhile, Matt Stoller will goon furiously to the faintest semblance of an idea that there is anything besides sheer kleptocracy at work in the proceedings
these are all terrible options, and if we lived in a functioning democracy with working regulators we'd think nothing of putting a blanket end to pointless media consolidation

these deals are always terrible for product quality, consumers, art and labor, but this is always downplayed in coverage.

i think it’s far more shallow than that, tbh — platner’s a big dumb white guy with (mostly fabricated) working class cred, which qualifies as exotic to particular subset of american political journalists
I can't discount how much of this is that reporters are being credulous because they don't think tattoos are a big deal & they don't want tattoos to be a big deal, particularly if the alternative is people lining up behind another boring old lady

Carney did not say this, the quote has been misattributed; it came from a social media user who was commenting on one of Carney's speeches, not the Liberal leader himself. This made the rounds in April, and while true, anyone who watches Carney knows he would think it, but never say it.

So, a lot of accommodations don’t really help you if you don’t have a relevant disability (having the test read aloud, for example).

Others, it’s worth asking why they *aren’t* universal. Extra time, for example: are tests time limited for assessment reasons or logistical ones?
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.
