The Marines Hymn is derived from a duet in Offenbach's Geneviève de Brabant, once quite popular.
It features two shitbag MPs who sing about how awesome they think they are. Seems strangely endearing and appropriate: most of us are not shitbags, but most of us are this bold.

A rare look at the Atlantic Fleet Marines of WW2. Here they are guarding captured Nazi's onboard USS Texas on June 7. 1944.

My latest in @warontherocks.bsky.social, discussing the debate around the MEF Information Group (MIG).

I critique some of the ways this discussion was previously framed, and recommend a more sound approach for assessing the #MIG's utility. #WriteFightWin

The advances we've made in statistics, experimental study design, and causal inference over the past century are remarkably useful for understanding our world. But there is never been a push to make people use them like we are seeing with generative AI. Perhaps take a moment to consider why.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
