Ok so what about the PLAN carriers? What do they tell us about things? Not what you'd expect. They're not very capable in terms of other carriers. They're slightly more capable in terms of sortie capacity and range than a US LHA, which isn't even classed as a carrier but an amphibious assault ship.

The USS Gerald R Ford is simply one of the most lethal things ever constructed by humanity and it can do the missions for which carriers are still the best tool better than any other, and a lot of other things besides.

Today, the better capability for long-range strike is any ship with a Vertical Launch System (VLS). They can launch different types of missiles and missiles are just better at long-range strike than the manned aircraft that a carrier can handle (land-based bombers are a totally different story).

Seen a few articles now that say USMC is failing back Force Design because it won’t establish a third MLR. That’s not exactly what’s happening. People seem to be missing this paragraph from the update:

They’re not shutting down the I-5 and it’s not a parade. I MEF does training landings at Res Beach all the time, this one will just have the VPOTUS present.
