This past wkend I went to a performance that included the 1942 piece Lincoln Portrait, written by the secular Jewish, leftist composer from NYC, Aaron Copland.
That & this essay from James has been a pertinent reminder of how a broad left coalition should embrace a duty-bound, American idealism.

I've written about Pericles, Lincoln, and the decay of civic life. You're welcome. I know this is the content everyone wanted.

I'm trying to imagine what AQI jihadist al-Sharaa would say if you told him while detained in Camp Bucca that "Someday, you will meet the host of the #1 rated American gameshow, The Apprentice, in the Oval Office."

Came across a random photo of this 'Roman tower' I'd never heard of before in Sarrin, eastern Aleppo. After taking a brief look I both came across some 1909 Gertrude Bell photos of the site and managed to located it

GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.
REPORTERS: 😳
KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

I feel like the chief lesson of Iraq/Afghanistan was, you need a hella of a lot of troops/resources to pull security until you can stand up a government/local security and even than its extremely difficult so for people not even a decade later to be like “actually you can do it super cheap” is wild
