The audiobook version of Why Politicians Lie About Trade seems to be out in the wild!

Read by the excellent Christopher Tester (www.christophertester.co.uk), it is delivered with more gravitas than I could have ever managed.

I also wish people would spell out the alternative proposal here.

"We should have kept tariffs and capital restrictions on China skyhigh in the hopes it never became a competitive industrial producer, trapping hundreds of millions in subsistance poverty and raising the cost of everything."
This is also said about Europe's approach to China and I simply don't believe this is true. I was at conferences with senior US folk in the early 2010s and none thought China would become more democratic or liberal.

We thought we could compete.

We now go live to Isaac Chotiner as he reaches out to Elon Musk offering an interview to clear up this whole Joyce Carol Oates "doesn't read" thing.

1/ Unique typing style aside, the President raises an interesting question here:

Why do some like me think Congress and the Founders are comfortable with him banning or licensing an import during an economic emergency, but not applying a tariff on it?

Let's talk about it.

Performing desirable behaviour and "virtue signalling" is also absolutely core to human society.

It's why we tell kids that stealing is wrong, rather than just that it's illegal and punishable by law.

Living in a place where people only treat each other well when forced to by rules would be AWFUL.
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

Well yes, if you allow Fox News and Ezra Douthglesias (h/t @mcopelov.bsky.social) to define a 2% tax increase on the upper band as Maoist extrimism so left wing it's on the next plane, then you can indeed pretend that a platform that would have made Reagan blush is actually moderate progressivism.
Name the ‘moderate position’ on literally any issue. Quickly.

If you're surprised businesses passed a new cost onto consumers, don't worry you're one of the smart ones.

In fact, you're so smart you may have been targeted by criminals who tamper with the wallets of geniuses.

Quick, send me your wallet so I can inspect it for damage.
70.5% OF NEW TARIFFS WERE PASSED ONTO CONSUMERS — PER LENDINGTREE LENDINGTREE DATA SHOW THAT OVER TWO-THIRDS OF NEW TARIFF COSTS WERE DIRECTLY BORNE BY CONSUMERS, HIGHLIGHTING HOW TRADE BARRIERS ARE DRIVING UP RETAIL PRICES AND ADDING TO INFLATIONARY PRESSURES.

The media, who give every Nazi that puts on a suit and speaks in complete sentences without the n word a glamorous cover story profile: "Why would the left do this?"

I would also add that the idea you have to be on there to have an accurate gauge of the zeitgeist no longer applies, if it ever did.

Trump spent his campaign making wild promises.

The media its time talking about how he wouldn't fulfill the promises he could do (cruelty, oligopoly, vengeance) and pretending that the promises he couldn't fulfill (restore US manufacturing, lower prices) were laudable anyway.
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

The Supreme Court is so funny.

Trump is flagrantly abusing a law passed to let a President shut down trade during an invasion to punish Brazil's courts for being mean to Balsanaro.

Democrats should absolutely listen to this advice provided they believe they can consistently, universally, and eternally operate in a way that creates nothing Republican ad makers can use, believe Republican ad makers won't just make shit up, and believe such blandness will appeal to voters.

Not the main point here but if President Trump were as popular as President Trump keeps saying he is, his endorsement in the mayoral race of his home city wouldn't need the threat of troops and funding freezes to back it up.
This isn't a closing election argument, it's Vidkun Quisling explaining why surrender is better than resistance.

It takes significantly less effort to tell a pollster you're going to do something than upending your entire life.

A child could understand this, and it is perhaps unsurprising that newspaper editors pretend not to for the purposes of running headlines about ""millions"" intending to flee.
This goes for all the lefties who said they'd move to Canada if Trump won too: People moving after an election is *far* rarer than people saying they'll move before an election.

Something a lot of the conversation seems to skip past is that Goodwin/Farage's point wouldn't hold even if the two train stabbing perpetrators had been recently arrived immigrants with luggage tags still on their suitcases.

It's scarier than that, for is it not written in Revelation 6:12:

"I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the US executive branch was inconvenienced in its ability to tax American purchases from abroad on a whim."
