hi everyone, I wrote a new thing. I briefly propose & explore the potential for a "bounty" model for news & digital media and how it relates to news, paywalls, subscriptions AI, PIVOT TO WIKI, and more. let me know what you think, unless you think it's really bad, then don't say anything.
the bounty model - pivot point mini-wiki - Obsidian Publish
this page proposes a new financial model for information sources. as i see it, this new model makes the most sense when applied to wiki formats or scientific journals, and less so when applied to bre…

The past days have made it clear: the only way Europe can avoid becoming subjugated vassal states to America, Russia & China is to unite in federation.

That our leaders have spent the past 2 decades blocking efforts to do so will be remembered as a tragedy.

AI CANNOT DETECT AI
My high school junior has been reduced to tears multiple times this year, because her English teacher requires them to run all their papers through AI to make sure it won’t be flagged as AI when she grades them. 3 times AI has told my child, whom I watched write the paper, that AI wrote the paper.

Dem presidents love appointing bureaucrats and republicans to run hard power agencies. The FBI has never *ever* had a Democratic director.

The tools schools buy to test papers for AI are 100% snake oil. No such accurate test exists. The companies selling them are scammers and grifters. If your kids' teachers are using them, contact them and be very clear that they are failing your children and should knock it off.

hmmm I wonder if there is something we could collectively do to establish a better common base of knowledge
i am not saying "nothing matters" because having a common base of knowledge is important for all kinds of reasons, it is just that you have to keep in mind that we live in an era of mass ignorance and fantasy

California has made real progress on land use and permitting — but we still aren’t building housing at the scale we need.

One reason: the way we build homes hasn’t kept pace with innovation. That’s what our new Select Committee is focused on.

it may be possible for me to publish for free using Quartz Syncer & GitHub pages. will investigate.
I think I'm going to shut down the Pivot Point wikisite for the time being, unfortunately. I have failed to get it to gain traction on here and also the Publish version of Obsidian is really falling behind the personal version. So it feels like a big waste of money.

the whole affair sums up how bad the admin's strategy was towards all of this
- why wait over a year and a half to talk about this
- why give one speech about it and not multiple speeches
- why sit back and do nothing while the press berates you about it
Biden gave one speech about the threat of democratic backsliding to which the press response was "did you see how sinister the background lighting was"
I don't know how to describe it, but there's this profound brokenness in the American body politic where nobody can take the implications of anything seriously. People keep saying things that should be existential threats to the political system, and then everyone just keeps going on as normal.

it would be more meaningful for Democrats to build a counterfactual J6 website than it would be for them to pass a congressional resolution about it
So like if an incoming democratic Congress passed a resolution like this on 1/3/2027, what would happen then? Like mechanically, what processes would this set into motion?
There should absolutely be some papers laying out the argument that an incoming democratic Congress could take the findings of the J6 committee and the impeachment and the Colorado process and pass a bicameral resolution that Trump committed insurrection on 1/6/2021.

I saw this coming. the only thing that upsets me is that Dems do not build counter resources on specific topics like this

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.

it's possible that T v. A was right in a limited scope in that the insurrection finding would need to come from a legislature or court where the insurrection actually occurred (J6 -> DC -> Congress or SCOTUS).

But imagine if POTUS tried to coup individual state govts! They need that jurisdiction!
Trump v. Anderson was wrongly decided, is my hottest take. And obviously wrongly decided. There.

Flash poll from @washingtonpost.com finds:

- Americans are roughly divided on whether striking Venezuela, capturing Maduro was a good idea. (40% approve, 42% disapprove)

- More skepticism for whether U.S. should take control of Venezuela. (24% support, 45% oppose)

We texted 1,000 Americans about U.S. actions in Venezuela. Here’s what they said.
A Washington Post poll shows Americans are split on sending military forces to Venezuela to capture Maduro. Most say it should have required Congress’s approval.
