it's like the common claim among cranks, "well most ppl in the Allied army were racists, so isn't the whole thing hypocritical?" it's stupid, and it always serves as a cheap attempt to diminish the heroism and sacrifice of those who fought and defeated far worse powers.
I suspect that most of these people aren’t even totally aware they’re making arguments that *logically conclude* at a place of “there really weren’t large differences between the Union and the Confederates”

I have seen this from many 'post-left' types who start from an 'America Bad' premise (the United States staying together was a Bad Thing) and from there go on to slowly start admiring the 'Southern way of life' contrasted to greedy mercantile Yankees and before you know it...

I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there
