the rub of course is that as far as tangible political behavior is concerned most ideologues, most of the time, are doing group/coalition politics and not philosophy

people sincerely committed to libertarianism as a philosophy did in fact clock Trump from the outset, and they have been right all along. libertarianism as a coalition partner within conservatism went along for the ride.

this and other (correct) reactions to this piece really underscore the distinction between ideologies as political philosophies and ideologies as coalitions of policy demanders
Yes, some of us did, but the libertarians at Reason were not prominent among them, except for the one who got fired for it.

bringing out Mike Tyson -- quite famously Not A Role Model for a bunch of different reasons! -- to call the entire country fat slobs on one of the biggest feast days of the year. pretty weird!

surprised to have not seen any Takes about the tension last night between the normie/friendly GLP-1 ads and the absolutely unhinged MAHA ad our government paid for where Mike Tyson blames his own sister for her heart attack

it's so funny that he wedged in a complaint about the new kickoff rule at the end there lmao

Pat McAfee spent a lot of time this week praising San Francisco and saying it's not the city many have made it out to be.

LLMs could surely generate passable children’s books, but I doubt they can generate Actually Good ones.

I don’t read a lot of romance novels, but I do read a lot of children’s books, which are likely similar in that you can immediately tell when the author is just trying to pay the bills vs when they thought about what they wanted to say.
The whole article is repulsive but this passage is at the core of it. She has no interest in writing books, she wants to win some kind of competition that nobody entered

I looked up all the words I didn’t know here and now I’m even more confused

starting a campaign to have "credibility" replace "authenticity" in the discourse since that's the term the spatial model papers use to explain two-party divergence

all good!

I mean the rightward shift in states both campaigns contested was smaller than the rightward shift in states the campaigns ignored. suggesting the harris campaign was doing something right, it just wasn't enough to overcome national trends

and may have something to do with why the swing states saw smaller swings!

"I'm a lifelong Republican but I'm voting for the Democrat because the Republican Party cut taxes for billionaires while raising costs for the working class" is quite literally what any candidate from any wing of the Democratic Party would be expected to run in swing state Octobers

this is a good ad!
... that the strategy to appeal to those voters was by signaling moving right. Ergo, the Liz Cheney appearances, zero trans people or Palestinians featured at the DNC, the positioning of her speech, the top spending outside ad featuring a lifelong Republican talking about tax cuts, etc etc.

I stand with County Executive Calvin Ball as he signs emergency legislation today prohibiting privately owned buildings from being used as ICE detention centers.

Howard County chose dignity, accountability, and its people. Tune into our event now:

Have you wondered why exactly it is that single-family zoning leads to racial segregation? I wrote this little article to figure it out. I use an agent based model to show it is a combination of race-based wealth inequality, homophily, & clustering of housing types in zoning maps.
