Just a reminder that the Maine primary is seven months away, there are eight other Democrats running in the primary, and filing hasn't closed. Plenty of time to review the platforms of people running, encourage someone you like to run, and/or run yourself.

NEW: Schumer rules out using a government shutdown as leverage on Venezuela in his press call.

"January 30 is days away," he said. "Let's first get all the facts out. That's what we're endeavoring to do right now, and our first ability to do that will be the War Powers Act of this week."

Colombian President Petro commenting on the US;

“A clan of pedophiles wants to destroy our democracy. To keep Epstein's list from coming out, they send warships to kill fishermen & threaten our neighbor with invasion for their oil."

SOCOM is pretty normal. Mostly they just do training iirc. JSOC are the guys who do most of the stuff you think of as "special operations", and I'm fine with it being disbanded.
SOCOM is a full combatant command that also has organize train equip responsibilities for SOF (like-ish a military service)

JSOC is a subunified command within SOCOM that post 9/11 was given global counterterrorism authorities

There's a solid argument for eliminating JSOC without functional replacement; SOCOM as a whole somewhat different story (whether we still call it SOCOM or something else)

we got so played
"Senior Venezuelan government officials, led by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez...have quietly promoted a series of initiatives in recent months aimed at presenting themselves to Washington as a “more acceptable” alternative to Nicolás Maduro’s regime...funneled through intermediaries in Qatar."
Exclusive: Venezuelan leaders offered U.S. a path to stay in power without Maduro
Delcy and Jorge Rodríguez used Doha backchannels to offer Washington a 'Cartel Light' plan for a managed Venezuela transition that keeps chavismo in power.

I disagree. The text of the AUMF authorized actions against groups who planned and execute the 9/11 attacks and those who harbor them. There’s no possible way the action against Venezuela is authorized by that and Caine and other general and flag officers should be tried for dereliction of duty.

Unless the "interim governing structure" is 'the Maduro regime run by Delcy Rodriguez,' they're gonna have a hard time governing much.

Either that or they have some invading to do. It is robustly unclear to me what they think they are doing or if they know.

So Trump has:
-illegally abducted Maduro, which the neocons love, because they want the opposition to take over
-but then left his VP, who fully supports him, in charge
-but said she would follow his orders
-but then she didn't
-and now the Venezuelan opposition is also condemning Trump

no one here should confuse me with a fan of joe biden but until he absolutely fucked the duck in Gaza his foreign policy was on a path to be the best of our lifetimes and not every democrat is a biden-esque pathological zionist
I came here to say this, Joe Biden sent the head of the CIA to meet with the Brazilian Joint Chiefs to tell them not to even think of any shenanigans ahead of the vote in 2022.

As a result Bolsonaro had to pull the idiotic and ineffective Jan 8 stunt in Brasilia.

the Wisconsin Idea and sewer socialism all came out of alliances between socialists and progressive Republicans (a thing that existed back then).

entirely possible that the resist libs be the 21st century version of the progressive Republicans, willing to ally with the left to beat conservatives
a generational shift in American politics is happening right now and a massive amount of the dem machine still doesn’t see it coming despite the largest mobilization org in the country openly telling its base to go join the questionable communists in anti-war protests

This is how it's done. If incumbent Democrats won't do the job, their primary challengers can and will use this to make sure someone else does
The Republican Congress has chosen to give away its authority and power and now we are being told Trump plans to occupy Venezuela. We don't cry for Maduro. We demand the following of our laws and Constitution. He is already threatening Mexico and Cuba will be next. Ann Wagner is silent.

If you're a military officer and you aren't going to have a frank discussion with your subordinates about this, you're derelict in your oath
Trump on Democrats: "They should say 'great job.' They shouldn't say, 'Oh gee, maybe it's not constitutional.' You know, the same old stuff that we've been hearing for years and years and years."

Well and truly, I hope Gustavo Petro is somewhere secure. If kidnapping Maduro and his wife is allowed to stand I find it very hard to believe that this kind of regime change stops with them.
Now that Colombia is threatened, by my count this is now ten countries.

Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Panama, Venezuela.

Yes and no

JSOC is not SOCOM is not the rest of DoD (and the rest of DoD tagging along with their small part of JSOC's latest illegal fever dream is, while not a good thing, different from them being whole hog into running their own fever dream)
Real black pilled on the military. The oath means absolutely nothing at all, apparently. Happy to be praetorians, just as long as the check clears.

It's not great but I'd like to respectfully disagree with Djinn here, JSOC is its own rotten thing that is probably due for severe reorganization. Yes there were air and naval assets in direct support but I'm still pretty optimistic that a big non SOF command would work against such an order.

I'll be honest. I don't care if proposing articles of impeachment is an empty gesture that will ultimately die in the Republican controlled congress, I want Dems to do it anyway. I want them to put political pressure on their opposing party even if it's doomed to fail.
"What do you want the Dems to DO exactly?" is kicked dog behavior. Elected officials are not meant to do insider trading and occasionally give a 4/10 speech about civility. They are an expression of the values of those they represent, you're damn right I expect up to and including physical action.

They’re against democratic legitimacy, which is premium-grade legitimacy; but they’re against nationalist legitimacy, communist legitimacy and even royalist legitimacy. They want to rule unaccountably, and they are opposed to any theory that could hold them to account.

Okay here’s an actual take: the fascist international is at war with the very concept of legitimacy.
Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.
