Wrote a piece for @slate.com explaining that states have a long history of prosecuting federal officers when they allegedly use excessive force. Federal officers are only immune from such prosecutions when they act reasonably in carrying out lawful duties.

Yeah, speaking as an American, it’s absolutely insane for any of my countrymen to act like you shouldn’t care or weigh in on what’s going on. Also, I am very sorry about all of this, and am deeply ashamed of what the US is doing. Many of us are trying to stop it but we have not yet been successful.

Maybe, but if so this is not evidence of that. Nobody actually thinks that it would help Dems to annex Canada. There is no base of support in the Democratic party or even in the GOP base for annexing Canada. It polls at 6% support nationwide. A few morons on social media is not evidence of more.

Sure but here’s no provision for “voluntarily surrendering a state’s right to political participation.” In fact you can deprive them of equal representation in the senate without their consent even with an amendment! I do think the Guarantee clause makes sense as the hook here, though.

I mean, Maduro is not the head of state. He lost the election and illegitimately kept power. I don’t think the operation was a good idea and it was obviously unconstitutional and illegal under U.S. law but there’s a clear distinction to be drawn here.

True. But Rhode Island had two competing governments for like a year and the feds basically just shrugged. Granted that was a long time ago.
