This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

This is why we all freak out about theft btw, bc just a few copies can make an actual, real difference. you would be surprised at how few copies someone needs to make it onto a bestseller list
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

The thing about "AI" is that before it became a marketing catchphrase by and for the worst douchebags you ever saw over the last few years, it was just a broad field of study that would periodically produce something that was narrowly useful, and it was Completely Fine, Actually.

It’s rarely easy to stand up against an illegal order. I did it for something relatively minor (setting up a fake contract in Afghanistan so the unit could have money to pay informants; illegal but not deadly) and it made my commander hate me (more). It’s still the correct, expected thing to do.

Back home from a work trip to the US, to which I no longer bring my personal phone. Good trip, many learnings.

But my only souvenir is this shitty headcold. 😕

Apparently I am also practicing car hoarding, house hoarding, husband hoarding, dog hoarding, computer hoarding, furniture hoarding and art hoarding.
stupid young people, stop buying a new phone every year if you don't want to be broke. wait no, not like that.

Urgent MSP #Caturday 🧵: these two handsome boys need a loving home as circumstances sadly force their person to part with them.

It's much simpler than that. The Boy Scouts aren't maximally cruel to trans kids and so Republicans believe it should be destroyed.

Crucially, by upholding their constitution and the rule of law, Brazil discovered that support for Bolsonaro evaporated save for a dwindling minority of die-hards and dead-enders. Because Brazilians see Bolsonaro as a criminal and a loser, they've largely moved on from him.

Could've been us...

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

About 99.9% of you who pirate books live in an area with a public library, and that library almost certainly has some sort of digital ebook platform. Go get a library card and a Libby account and just wait your six weeks for your free copy to borrow like the rest of us.

There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

What are you talking about. No. They don't. If publishers considered libraries to be piracy, they wouldn't sell books to libraries.

And you don't have to physically go to the library to request the book. Your make requests on your Libby/Overdrive account.
remember: the same major publishers that define what piracy is, also define libraries as piracy.

And for the library to get even a digital copy, people who go to that library have to actively request the book. After so many requests, then they're put into the system to be allowed copies to lend.
