Today I am a very successful software developer. But I did not make more than $50K/year until I was almost 30.
Building a well-paying career takes time. Always has for all but the most privileged. What's missing today in the US are unions, along with affordable college, housing, and medical care.

People wildly overestimate the economic security experienced by past generations. There's no period in American history where significant numbers of young people were just handed high paying jobs. Nostalgia for a time that never existed is a huge problem.
