Remember when we weren't allowed to drink milk because we were too fat so we had to eat cereal dry for like six years? The 90s, am I right?

This cabbage is unlocking some Proust madeleine shit for me right now.

Remember rice cakes? Remember when we were eight years old and our moms all put us on a diet of rice cakes because they said we were too fat because we weighed more than a teen figure skater she saw on TV? What a time.

*Other Black people*: "Ha ha, white people don't season their food!"

*Me, a single tear running down my cheek as a recall the saltless years, the NoSalt years, the gimmick diets, and the general lack of flavor that defined my childhood.*: "Yes. White people. Ha ha."

It turns out when you lightly blanche and season cabbage instead of boiling it to mush and not adding any salt it is very good actually

I thought I didn't like so many foods but then it turned out my parents were just terrible at cooking.

There's a pretty good chance she is just saying whatever to ragebait people

It's also probably my favorite era of American literature but I have to give a ton of disclaimers and warnings when I recommend that stuff.
February 18, 2026 at 8:53 PM
Like if someone says this about 15-20 years, they usually have beef with the depiction of race, gender, sexuality, sexual assault, and other problematic stuff or with the lack of representation, but 1975 is dead in the center of the 70s, imo American literature's most unwoke era.
February 18, 2026 at 8:47 PM
This attitude is silly on its face, but like, 50 years? 1975? That's your line? It honestly makes more sense to me when people say this kind of thing but limit it to 15 or 20 years, 'cause at least then you get a sense of a coherent ideological project.
Meanwhile, on threads, which actually is like what people on twitter think bluesky is like, a "teacher, author, poet" speaks...

Saw an old-fashioned "women should date men who are nice to them" type MRA in the wild, like spotting an ancient beast from times long past skulking in the mist.

The upside of being a dramatic person is that a life filled with conflict and struggle is, in fact, good actually.

Some things are just conservative, actually.

This post brought to you by me seeing someone say that a woman marrying a man to achieve power in society is neoliberal feminism.
February 17, 2026 at 4:02 PM
Neoliberalism is kind of a vibes-based term to begin with, but the way people use it only now is even more vibes-based than that.

"People in Texas probably support trans people more than people in California because California is full of liberal phonies." Your brain has been poisoned by online.

"He doesn't use the right words but his heart is in the right place." I wonder what words he would use if his kid told him he was trans.
February 17, 2026 at 2:57 PM
I never understand why people romanticize the idea of the hypothetical unwoke trans ally.

I feel like AI is less creating the Torment Nexus from the classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus and more creating the Neverending Story from the classic fantasy novel Don't Lose Your Humanity Inside the Neverending Story.
February 17, 2026 at 2:29 AM
One day I think I'll make a collage of all the times I've seen the idea of Black trans art raised as a self-evident example of woke run amok, either as empty "identity politics" on the left or as undeserved anti-meritocratic DEI slop on the center/right.

It's in the Atlantic but it's behind a paywall so I don't know if it is actually particularly scathing.
