I do not think military actions in terms of responsibility of the population, but in terms of enforcing the norm of non-aggression.

I think the collective responsibility of the people should not directly be used as a justification of even relatively minor collective punishments ...
there is this very American notion that if you are suffering, you either deserve it or you do not

Reiner was habitually singled out by everyone from the right to South Park as an avatar of Hollywood activist cringe but he consistently put his money where his mouth was and had the courage of his convictions, which grifters and smugger than thou “equal opportunity offenders” resent above all
He's also responsible for raising all the money that paid for bringing Hollingsworth v. Perry & even more importantly Bostic v. Schaefer, which created the circuit split that forced SCOTUS to take on Obergefell v. Hodges. The role he played in American marriage equality cannot be overstated.
The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

We are now at the point in a family health crisis, where one sibling is insisting we communicate their ChatGPT-backed theory (that contains 0 references to actual studies) to doctors, demanding a therapeutic intervention that has (as far as I can tell) never been tried/tested for a case like this.

There was a whole thing on the right about kids these days lacking "grit" and establishing "grit," and we really need to start throwing that back at the right. If you are having big feelings because someone is wearing an outfit you don't like, that is an opportunity to develop some grit!
Exactly. Coddling them is not helping them or anyone else, and makes things worse for others.

Hard times are war, depression, tyranny. Not "I saw on my smartphone that people I don't know are reading books at a library in another town at a voluntary family event that I didn't attend." FFS.
I can understand, even if I disagree, why French wants to try and empathize with the concerns of these RW culture war types. But that empathy is just reinforcing their whiny, spoiled attitude when what they need to be told is to grow the fuck up, those aren’t real problems.

Trump thinks that a "trade deficit" is a literal hole on a balance sheet that needs to be filled, which is why he's so obsessed with the term. he also firmly believes that he's the very first POTUS to ever figure this out and that this makes him smarter than all the others. it is all VEEEERY stupid.
The problem is that Donald Trump sincerely believes that net export outflows are literal wealth leaving the United States which is why he says things in the WSJ like we just need to give it time, it's not some insincere, cynical position covering for some other thing

Today is the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting. There are no words to express the grief and anger that our young people continue to be slaughtered in school.

And for what? More guns?

This is a policy failure — and a moral one. Enough.

My heart is with Providence today.

NYT does an entire podcast on the state of journalism...and the panel has more entertainers than journalists.

What the industry values and prioritizes is pretty clear by the balance of this panel.

Tbh this argument is funny because it’s not like this person said something off color in a breakroom or posted a slur on Facebook. They literally racially harassed a customer, something that really is a firable offense under any employment regulation scheme
I wrote about why we should not celebrate someone losing their job, especially in today’s America, even when they’ve done terrible racist things.

Losing a job should also be harder and involve workers’ bodies not unilateral management decisions.
