That recent counter-intuitive @cgdev.org piece by Bahar and Hausmann suffers fatal flaws, starting with a Stata programming error. We fall back on the intuitive conclusion that U.S. economic conditions drive encounters at the border

Having lived in DC I feel this in my bones
American star Alysa Liu overcame a delay en route to the Milano Skating Arena caused by Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade and finished second in the women’s short program at the Olympics team event.

“We almost didn’t make it,” her coach said.
Nothing could stop the U.S. figure skating team. Not even JD Vance’s motorcade.

Anyway, yeah. The overwhelming impression one gets from so many of these emails is that a lot of them are guys who have never had a real, serious friendship with a woman in their lives.

Which sucks for them, but also sucks for every woman who has to deal with them, ever.
@wyden.senate.gov's record of warning that there is deep and constitutionally-serious dirt being done by the intelligence agencies in secret is unblemished. The vaguer he is, the filthier the dirt is. This is the vaguest I've ever seen him

And also why you can’t give ANY administration the tools because even if they use them the way you want then the tools are still there for an administration you do don’t like

Donald Graham didn't just sell the Washington Post to Jeff Bezos, who is merrily dismantling it today. Before that Graham let Mark Zuckerberg out of an agreement for the Post to buy 10 percent of Facebook for $6 million. Today that 10 percent would be worth $175 billion.
As an aside, Rachel is a legend. (From Fischer’s “African Founders”)

Thanks. It’s not good

I had flagged the dropped apostrophe as one sign that the passage was worthy of skepticism; that it seems to be JE’s edit makes more sense of that
Federal Judges have a very real and well-established reason to fear doxing and violence and yet I doubt anyone thinks it would be acceptable for them to preside from the bench in a hood.
Fucking surreal that people dressed like this and carrying assault rifles are permitted to kidnap people off our streets

It’s not magic. I understand, however, that counting votes might SEEM like magic after years of eating too much of that sweet, sweet lead paint
Mike Johnson on Trump calling for Rs to "nationalize" elections: "We had 3 Republicans who were ahead on election day in last cycle & every time a new tranche of ballots came in they just magically whittled away until their leads were lost. It looks on its face to be fraudulent. Can I prove it? No"

It's not a perfect metaphor but that's my view of "better training" and all that

ICE is the SA but folks like @schumer.senate.gov prefer the SS
MAGA figures are now calling for an *escalation* in ICE's war on Americans. "Raise the temperature," says Steve Bannon. They want an authoritarian terror state and they see ICE as its vanguard.

On the pod @gbrockell.bsky.social is good on the sadism that defines ICE:

Therein lies the problem. ICE is terrorizing Los Angeles, and local police are choosing not to enforce the law banning masked federal agents.

This is how trust collapses.

All bodycams are going to do is facilitate a surge in prosecutions for “assaulting agents” and improve data collection about protesters so good work everyone who pushed for that big reform.

Dr Oz on rural healthcare: "There's no question about it, whether you want it or not -- the best way to help some of these communities is gonna be AI-based avatars"

Please do not get carried away. Use of nominal exchange rates makes this highly misleading. Real GDP grew 57% from 1999-2013, or 3.3% per year.

Better than say, Mexico, which came in under 1.8% per year. But VZ growth not as stunning as suggested
Impeachment is the only Constitutional check Congress has against a lawless president and talking about it would be a good start to reasserting Congressional power in the future. Assuming of course Congress wants to do that
Speaking out like this is all they can do now. Impeachment is a total and complete joke, and threatening to use it is akin to threatening to hit someone with a wet noodle. Impeachment is no longer a viable tool to use against Republican politicians.

like this is absurd, get over yourselves
Good to see that many Dem elected officials now want to be seen getting involved in the cases of immigrants who have been wrongly detained by ICE.

Let's spare a word for @vanhollen.senate.gov, who did this for Kilmar Abrego Garcia back when wise pundits said this was politically dangerous.

It’s ok they can just sell back
