New from Francisco Rodríguez, myself, and Giancarlo Bravo:

That recent counter-intuitive @cgdev.org piece by Bahar and Hausmann suffers fatal flaws, starting with a Stata programming error. We fall back on the intuitive conclusion that U.S. economic conditions drive encounters at the border
Do Venezuelan Oil Revenues Drive Migration to the US? A Reappraisal of the Bahar and Hausmann Results
We show that their results are driven by a flawed empirical specification that appears to be the result of a coding error.

Bsky hasn’t heard the story about the time that I was giving a virtual colloquium to the Aspen Center for Physics in September 2020 and Lawrence Krauss, Geoff Marcy, Christian Ott all attended as a group

ACP now has a policy that would prevent this from happening, because of that incident 🔭

Not precisely, but in recognizable strokes:

The current account records the balance of trade in currently-produced goods and services. A negative balance means the market value of our imports exceeded that of our exports. This is what we call a "trade deficit". (Quotes to be explained)

Just so we're clear on something, if Keller is Captain of the Fleet technically that makes her a Fleet Captain which is higher rank than Captain, so technically she outranks the other seven Captains in the PWHL. This information is of no value whatsoever. Carry on with your day.

The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

truly it is a mystery why women find it hard to get ahead in academia
"I could be a mentor to this very sharp person but as they aren't interested in me romantically I'm going to have to cut off all communication with them."

"Also, only men get the best mentors like me who can help them get into top journals. Clearly that's because men have higher IQ than women."

Interestingly, this is not true. Nice example of one of the central analytic pitfalls in this area, confusing net flows with gross ones.
I cannot emphasize enough that increasing foreign investment in the US and shrinking US trade deficits are in direct, irreconcilable tension w/ one another.

Once again asking people going off about balance of payments accounting to recognize the difference between "investment" and a "net capital flow"

You are leaving out “not knowing what gets accounted for”… the most likely source of the nonsense you replied to
the classic economics pundit error is mistaking an accounting identity for a causal relationship. a less classic error is to try to abolish the accounting identity

Betting this is an argument from accounting in which @peark.es does not understand what is accounted for

But also, this is a lame, transparent attempt to deflect from the fact that his no beards policy is clearly aimed at and will disproportionately affect black men.

"Hey look at all the silly white people we're pissing off!"
Hegseth: "We don't need to be a military of beardos anymore. Do you know how many troops claim to be Nordic Pagan? No, suddenly it's become this real fake religious affiliation inside the Pentagon where troops came to be Nordic Pagan so they can grow a beard and nobody challenges them on it."
