Powerful winds are ripping through the Arctic, breaking up critical sea ice that once acted as a shield against disturbance from wind and waves.

Scientists warn the loss of sea ice is speeding up the region’s ecological collapse and could disrupt weather patterns far beyond the Arctic.

NOAA aerial imagery is coming in. Hurricane Melissa literally turned western Jamaica from green to brown. Vegetation damage is immense — recovery will take years.
It’s okay to be glad that restaurants are doing stuff like this AND absolutely furious about the utter failure of the United States government.
I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

Just so we're clear: This administration's blatant, unapologetic choice to deny food to 42 million people—to have the money sitting there and say, "No, we'll let them go hungry"—is simply a more overt display of why homelessness and poverty keep worsening in this country.

Because it's *decided.*

The newsletter from agricultural producer news site WATT Poultry is now a primary source of my anxiety. H5N1 is exploding in North American poultry. Every day, a headline like this.

But no human cases. Either there aren't any or there's no testing. Given CDC's dismantling, I can guess.
Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

Nobel Week is once again upon us! How many women and how many scientists from the Global South will be awarded Prizes this year? Remember that this is typically a set of Prizes dominated by white men from North America (some Europe, some Asia). The first announcement was today: Medicine. 🧵 1/

Polio was scary when I was a child, particularly when we went swimming, in Canadian lakes. I got one of the earliest vaccinations, I was told. I have never missed a vaccination since.

Poland has become a global leader in participatory budgeting, through which local residents decide how some public money is spent.

Over half of all such schemes in Europe are found in Poland, and they are quietly transforming its cities, towns and villages, writes Callum MacRae.
