50 years ago today, Nov. 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank beneath the waves of Lake Superior during a massive storm.
The sinking took the lives of all 29 men on the ship, and became immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot's song.
This is the story of this terrible tragedy.

On Nov. 10, 1979, a 106-car freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire in Mississauga.
The incident led to the largest evacuation in North American history to that point.
Not a single life was lost.
This is the story of the Mississauga Miracle.

When his battalion was pinned down in the Battle of the Ancre Heights, James Richardson started playing his bagpipes and marching ahead as the Germans fired on him.
His bravery inspired his fellow soldiers, who then led a successful attack.
This is his badass story.

The 1962 Grey Cup became known as The Fog Bowl.
The fog was thick enough that many fans could not see action on the field. The game was suspended in the fourth quarter and continued the next day. It is the only Grey Cup to ever suspend play.
Winnipeg defeated Hamilton 28-27.

On this day in 1963, Gordie Howe scored his 545th career goal, breaking the record set by Maurice Richard. Howe finished his career with a record 801 goals. That record was broken by Wayne Gretzky on March 23, 1994. Howe now sits third all-time behind Ovechkin and Gretzky.

On this day in 1918, the Western Union Cable Office in North Sydney, Nova Scotia received a top-secret coded message from Europe stating that all fighting would cease on Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. The news leaked, and an impromptu parade and celebration was held in the community.

On this day in 1934, the first penalty shot in NHL history was awarded to Montreal Canadiens forward Armand Mondou. He took the shot against Toronto goalie George Hainsworth, who stopped the shot. The penalty shot rule was added at the start of the 1934-35 season.

On this day in 1941, Carrie Derick died.
Born in 1862 in Clarenceville, Canada East (Quebec), she was the first woman professor of a Canadian university. A leading geneticist and botanist, she also founded McGill University's genetics department.

Happy birthday to Andre De Grasse, born on this day in 1994 in Scarborough!
In his sprinting career, he has won two gold, two silver and three bronze at the Olympics. He also won a World Championship. He was the first Canadian sprinter to win three medals in a single Olympics.

On this day in 1908, Charles Merritt was born in Vancouver.
During the Dieppe Raid in 1942, his bravery earned him the Victoria Cross. He was captured and sent to a POW camp. In June 1943, he escaped with 64 others. He was recaptured but survived the war. He died in 2000.

Born in 1863 in Quebec, he was called the strongest man to ever live. His feats included lifting 227 kg with one finger and backlifting 1,967 kg.

On this day in 1845, Sir John Sparrow David Thompson was born. As Minister of Justice, he enacted the Criminal Code. He served as Prime Minister from 1892 until his death in 1894.

On this day in 1997, The Sweet Hereafter, directed by Atom Egoyan, premiered in Canada.
One of the greatest Canadian films ever made, it won the Grand Prix at Cannes, seven Genie Awards and earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Georgina Pope served in both the Second Boer War and the First World War.
As a nurse, she ran military hospitals, helped thousands of soldiers and was the first Canadian to receive the Royal Red Cross.
