James Talarico: Why do we have a trillionaire when veterans are sleeping on the streets? I’m all for success, but this is not success. This is hoarding. The reason poverty still exists in the wealthiest country in history is not because we can’t feed the poor. It’s because we can’t satisfy the rich

The reason you defend civil liberties is not because it is popular (it is never popular) but because if the government can deport you to a foreign gulag without trial then it doesn't matter how popular the rest of your policy platform is.

My wife is overwhelmed on inpatient service this week, and not a single one of these patients is anything other than a huwhyte amurrican. in point of fact, the nursing staff is more diverse than the patient census.
Its kind of insulting just how stupid they think everyone is

Anybody: I’m going to build a 6-plex a half mile from you that is affordable on a $75k income.

Median Voter: And ruin the neighborhood?!

I love the idea that punishing powerful people for crimes is a "minor issue to most voters" and therefore should be deprioritized but "assiduous commitment to procedure", a thing literally nobody in the history of the universe has sincerely cared about, is critical
That’s a minor issue to most voters. It needs to be addressed, but there’s always the danger of political self interest warping the fairness, so assiduous commitment to procedure is critical.

It's because she doesn't know how to be the head of CBS News. Just no clue what a person in this role does. Similar to how Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy don't know how to be cabinet secretaries.

A hallmark of this movement is people being out of their depth. It says, "expertise is unnecessary."
I’m sorry but why is the head of cbs news on tv herself

Hello friends, I recently lost my health insurance + benefits & am currently looking at a bill of over $16,000 for which I cannot pay. This would not necessarily be an issue if I were not visually impaired and currently out of full time work, but I am humbly asking for assistance now. Any bit helps.

This is true, for the maximum Reconstruction scenario to happen the North would have had to be willing to shell out the money to dismantle cash crops for food crops and rewrite the entirety of Southern culture from scratch against a colossal backlash. That willingness did not exist.
Like, no, the South did not *win* the Civil War in any way, shape, or form. And the US that emerged out of the Civil War was vastly *less* oligarchic than before & remained so, b/c even the Robber Barons were nothing compared to the literal Slaveocracy, and crooked local elites *weakened* over time.

Literally every single bad decision this country has made over the past half-century can be attributed to “a lot of voters are panicky racist morons” but left, center, and right all have a vested interest in denying that and keep tying themselves in more ornate knots to avoid confronting it

During the Biden administration, I met with a senior DoD official who told me that the USG didn't have much leverage over Israel because Israel could readily substitute US-supplied arms and materiel.

I knew what they were saying was false.

And they knew that I knew what they were saying was false.
How does that work? Well, look no further. Here, I explain why Israel CANNOT fill the gap left by a US withdrawal. Indeed, we provide irreplaceable capabilities that allow Israel to carry out its war without consequence.

Without the US military, the war ends.

my best friend and i used to watch MST3K super regularly and over 30 years later, we still constantly quote it in regular conversation, to the bewilderment and annoyance of our friends. there’ll be some middle aged guy saying 6-7 to his buddies in 2058
the 6-7 phenomenon is in no way different from any other catchphrase that kids have yelled out at any point in the last hundred years, there's no daylight between that and when i was in high school, the year straight where every guy kept yelling "i'm rick james bitch"

This is basically the core misery at the heart of the current RW movement. A complete lack of human feelings or emotions, just raw unfiltered sociopathic behavior the entire way down.
ultimately, no one even grieved Charlie Kirk. he was just another thing for the worst people on earth to get outraged over. and when the outrage of real events wasn't enough, they invented new ones.

not even his wife saw his death as anything other than an opportunity.
my read is they were trying to whip up the usual frenzy, but then the effort got blown up by Candace Owens saying The Jews did it

AP on Trump now, and Biden in June 2022.

For Trump, declining to 36 percent approval is “good news.”

For Biden, holding steady at 41% is “a source of concern.”

One of my political realizations from the Trump Era is how frequent there is a total disconnect between "optimal" policy versus "good for stable functioning democracy" policy
it's why left-YIMBYism is, imo, the correct position from a political economy point of view. the trade offs of rent control vs zoning + development reform really mean that the costs of the former are offset by the latter
yeah i'm not being funny but most arguments against rent controls, while they may be /economically/ sound, are bad from the perspective of /political/ economy

The story *seems* to be that the assassin decided to shoot Kirk because he interpreted Kirk's words as offending his girlfriend's honour; his girlfriend being a trans woman. It's hard to think of a more traditionally masculine act than that, right down to nobody benefiting from it in the end.
It’s kind of incredible how little has been published about this guy and how little conservatives seem to care. Did people just forget these people were screeching for civil war when they thought he was a liberal?

Yeah I’m sorry, but this is indefensible and is *exactly* the kind of shit that people are talking about when they talk about non-profit/activist brainworms. And it’s causing real harm here! Minorities are more likely to be victims of drunk drivers as well!
The California ACLU is staunchly opposed to the ignition interlock device program and is a big reason that it has not been expanded. Despite the fact that California heavily subsidizes the cost for low-income drunk drivers, the ACLU says that the program is a form of "racialized wealth extraction."
