I also tried tracing great-great-granddad's line but that's proving quite tough. Like I mentioned yesterday I managed to find him (Yankel Goldberg, b. 1879 in Odesa) and now have his father's name as a result (Leib Getsel) but I cannot seem to find any record of the latter.

Legit. My current entirely unsupported hypothesis is that he moved there sometime in the 1840s simply because he doesn't appear in any revision lists prior to 1844

Do you have any advice on how I might go about tracing where he was from? The only information I have is that he was born, depending on which record about his age is telling the truth, in either 1803 or 1818, and that his dad's name was Meer. His first mention is in the Bessarabian revision lists

my apparent direct ancestor, Leizor Baltaksa, is listed as "middle class" without further clarification and apparently just /appears/ in Chisinau around the 1840s so until I find something more concrete out from before then I choose to believe he comes from a very successful family of tax collectors

I feel moderately weirded out when people say "he's not a neo-nazi, he's just a plain nazi". I know why you think that sounds more intense but I hope y'all know that the reason we attach "neo-" to "Nazi" is not because it's somehow a different thing. It's literally just to indicate it is post-1945.
