As a creature who believes in a basic right to national sovereignty I would like to congratulate the United States on forcing me to actively support the Chavistas winning a war

Remember how appalled we all were in 2022 when Russia completely unprovoked attacked Ukraine? That is what we’re doing tonight with Venezuela. We are the bad guys here. Everyone who supports this is supporting unprovoked murder. Fuck every last one of them

People on the DnD subreddit currently getting real mad that Jeremy Crawford said that warlocks don't necessarily need to obey their warlocks as if that isn't on some level obvious

i find the post-2022 refugee wave to israel from russia and ukraine so fascinating because on the surface those who fled are very similar groups of people - young, not very frum, not very leumi, basically aliyah'd out of necessity. but the difference is that the ukrainian ones are like this online

“It would be way better if at the end of every speech Mamdani turned to the camera and said, ‘I am a Zionist now”, and then specified he's the exact same kind of Zionist as i am.”

Full disclosure, I actually /strongly/ oppose framing Lithuania as "a Lithuanian state."
I don't think France should "be a French state" either, whatever that means.

this is what i ultimately dislike about, let's call it the myth of the artificiality of zionism: to basically treat it as an invention of nefarious western (christian) powers and not an idea a lot of jewish people came up with perfectly fine by themselves is just a patronising rewrite of history
in 2024 behind the bastards did their annual non-bastard podcast about abba kovner. i couldn’t bring myself to listen to it, but i’ve been told by someone who did that they said “even though he was a zionist he tried to kill nazis” and i’m like you misspelled “partially because”

Every other opinion column in an English-language paper these days is just 'random Labour/Democrat apparatchik explicitly opposes the concept of civil society'
Just like the Tories, Labour's centrist hacks think themselves omniscient and infallible - they cannot fail, they can only be failed. So when they do fail, they blame everyone else.

We saw it with the Tories, and it's already started from the Starmerites with this idiotic dreck: archive.ph/rHoXA

i really hate how for some inexplicable reason if i point out the basic reality that at least since the twelfth century scotland has been one of europe's most developed countries a bunch of yanks who think grandpa's family lore is of equivalent weight to historical fact will just refuse to accept it

people often think the first laws mandating persecution of jews were introduced after rome turned christian and i have some really bad news on that front,
anyway i think the enlightenment was actually a huge cultural break with rome as it actually existed because if any of them looked at an average democratic republic today they would be utterly horrified at so many good things we do as par for the course

ujamaa is best retroactively understood as a clever little game of saying "socialism,,,,, it is actually african,,,,, and capitalism is not,,,,,,"

it's like john maclean insisting the scots are a naturally socialist people because highland clan society "was" "socialist"
The "powerful critique of neoliberal capitalism" of "not having enough food to eat" and "being forced to live on a communal farm." The peasantry specifically actively resisted ujaama because the traditional model of Tanzanian agriculture was individual family farms, not communal ownership!

i had an argument with my dad on christmas about the historicity of braveheart because he had an imo very incorrect take that braveheart is ahistorical because it depicts scotland as ahistorically unified. i corrected him: it depicts scotland as ahistorically backward technologically and politically
Many things can be said about Scotland's relationship with England but you wonder sometimes if we're not a bit too uwu smol bean about the millennia of beating the shit out of each other because ultimately, we do tend to win!

On some level I blame those maps they put in children's history books too. Seeing "Kingdom of" before so many different names on the map of Europe tricks the reader into thinking that Scotland, England, France, Poland and Castile were run exactly the same way or even particularly similarly.
Look, all I'm saying is, while you /should/ depict your fantasy people as semi-regularly miserable and prone to caving people's skulls in, it's entirely possible they decided to cave skulls in a regional assembly of local smallholders, not because Lord Borys Jonson ordered them to.

broke: the grand duchy of lithuania from ~1240 to 1387 was a feudal society
woke: the grand duchy of lithuania from ~1240 to 1387 was a pre-feudal society
bespoke: the grand duchy of lithuania from ~1240 to 1387 was a capitalist society
you lose your estate or the support of your warband? sucks to be you, you are no longer a nobleman

you, a peasant, win the support of someone else's warband and take over their house? congratulations. the grand duchy of lithuania welcomes its newest nobleman

In principle this allows us to imagine a scenario where circa 1330 a bankrupt Lithuanian nobleman is bought out of his estate by his household slave, who has been placing very effective targeted investments in the salt trade
January 2, 2026 at 2:03 AM
fuck. that scene in herkus mantas where herkus tells the bartian nobleman to fuck off and that his slave will lead the troops now was oddly close to the mark
in this context what it basically means is that the only truly heritable title in the land prior to the nobles privileges of 1387 was that of the overall ruler, the grand duke. everyone else was in a state of actually fairly high social mobility
