Discovered a new incredibly based medieval person
I still don't know who Adam Tooze is and you can't make me find out. The economy may be real but that doesnt mean I have to believe economists are

Man, there is no need to want to know this.
Could someone explain to me what is meant when a British person refers to "the middle class" ? Like, in the US, as I hear it, it basically just means a person who makes a certain amount of money, not too far below and not wildly above the median. Seems like a complex concept when UK writers use it?

Okay no, absolutely not. We are not doing "Jar Jar Binks is woke, actually"
I love this website.

No, it's terminal and therefore one of the stronger cases for legalising euthanasia
are writers for the spectator okay?

To put it another way, *capital* is perfectly capable of organizing decarbonization. The problem is *capital-owners*, who are political actors and not just the embodiments of the accumulation process. Elon Musk is symptomatic here.

The problem from their point of view is that rapid decarbonization requires public, collective decisions about the organization of production, in a way that threaten capital-owners' authority over both the production process and the political system.

in general ime, unlike straight women, who usually need to be encouraged to dump a Terrible Guy, so many breakups initiated by straight men really are quite stupid and should be questioned by a well-meaning friend looking them dead in the eyes and going "but are you sure, because this is nuts"
November 10, 2025 at 4:11 PM
i'm not gonna lie lads i find it hard to take this notion seriously. you all seem to think it's really illustrative but i think, subjectively, that it's just whiny
I do in fact live with a person who doesn't eat the same stuff as I do, we have actually quite distinctive tastes, and all we do is basically just work around the issues because the notion of breaking up over that is silly.

the message of The Thick of It wasn't "Malcolm Tucker is a hero"
some British Politics Knowers relish just a bit too much the fact that politics is often dirty, dishonest, untransparent and closed, which are bad things that they don't necessarily have to be
Relatedly, I really hate seeing the affected internet leftist cynicism of "young people who are into politics are weird and it anything we should discourage them" takes, another instance of actually just mystifying and wonkifying political involvement and making the claim a self fulfilling prophecy
November 10, 2025 at 3:27 PM
i'll grant you this makes me a particularly orthodox kind of pro-multiculturalism proselytiser, in that i can't take objections of that ilk particularly seriously even as a point to engage with
As a child of multiple generations of religions and ethnicities marrying despite generally accepted bans I think even abstract reservations about it kind of aren't valid.

Speaking as the former Co-Convener of a political party youth wing, I will die in the ditch of "youth wings are good, actually": the Scottish Greens got 8 solid years of quite intense activism out of me it'd have never have got had the Scottish Young Greens not existed and drawn me in!

Like I'm sorry but the average 20 year old wants to hang out with other 20 year olds, not old people. This is a societally universal phenomenon that has to be adjusted to, not "why won't people just"-ed

i'm now discovering that there are people who affirmatively think they cannot be happy if their partner doesn't share their taste in food and while i'm not one to yuck your yum (pun intended) i think that's why you're single
I see Americans say insane things like "I need my partner to share my religious views" and that's fundamentally nuts to me, it's like saying that you can't date people who don't eat steak.

you'll never believe the context chain that led here
Well aren't you a spiky pear, coming to start fights with strangers.

Yes, I think you're a complete prat who is using anecdotal evidence of his own experience and pretending it's a universal rule. I also think you're a bit of a confrontational arsehole now.

Muted x

Really quite disturbed by what feels like a noticeable increase in the vulgarity of what people feel like they can say about women in the public eye.

Also, if you think safeguarding is bad in *youth* wings, just wait until you see the average wider party.

Ultimately, parties have to accept that youth wings will attract a volatile combination of the bullyable and the bullies and spend active time defusing that.

i dont even like being involved in those groups. i didn't particularly like being in the YSI. but notably, i actually, voluntarily, went to things it organised, and i /did not/ go to things my branch at the time organised until i hit like 24
The reality is actually that identity politics works. Our conference has motions about issues relevant to young people, students, and queer people because their respective affiliates prepare them. If they didn't, no one would, because no one does.

look i just think the attrition of internal democracy in modern political parties is a bad and undesirable trend that should be stopped, not a logical and good one. call this a bout of cute idealism

the one good thing, the /one/ good thing (i did not stutter, do not argue with me) that came out of the soviet occupation of lithuania is that the notion of people being against interfaith marriage is absolutely bizarre to me and probably most people of my background.

it's actually no joke but the main thing that makes me buy paradox dlc these days is unironically when a total conversion mod i play requires them for important flavour. i basically don't play vanilla ck3/eu4 anymore

Quarry and career (or in Lithuanian, karjeras and karjera) being both derived from two French words that are both pronounced and spelled carrière, but have two completely different etymologies, viscerally upsets me.

It's actually really dark how this is the exact same line of argumentation as the one Russian propaganda uses, from people who would in that origin point find it absurd and nonsequitury.
