In this change

- Luke added a text box system! You can add rich text boxes to your maps via an interactive editor.
- I added the ability to put multiple years on the same density plot. Just select multiple years in the sidebar and they appear!
Can anyone identify this coin?

The thing that's surprising about avatar isn't that it's a thing that a lot of people watch but nobody talks about, it's that it's that while also not looking like slop. I think the synthesis here is that it's just what happens when someone does a really high effort job at making slop.
I feel like takes like this would be much better applied to stuff like The Big Bang Theory or something, shows like NCIS get watched a lot, but by people who just kinda want to watch whatever slop is on TV at the moment. They aren't competing with succession but rather with YouTube channels

Tbh there's kinda a reason all political campaigns were run on effectively mutual aid until the early 20thC; its an effective way to bank votes in depolarized local environments, which is how everything but presidential/gubenatorial races worked until the progressive era reforms

The Hallmark phenomenon is so unrelatable to me, as someone who has been moving to progressively smaller towns through my life (born in LA, undergrad in SF, grad in Boston), so going home for the holidays means being reacquainted with the beauty and joy of a real city

It's crazy how despite all the success, the main cultural impact of avatar is this exact kind of post lol
these movies are fascinating to me, none of the people i hang around with in real life have ever seen them, i've never heard any of those people talk about them, and my friend group includes a lot of people who see and talk about movies often, but i *know* that tons of people go see and enjoy them

nukecels in shambles
some good climate/energy news:

* 96% of new US power capacity was carbon-free in 2024 (56 gigawatts!)

* 2025 included the first month ever when 51% of power on the U.S. grid was carbon-free

* The golbal trend is overwhelming: The world is now investing more $ in clean energy than fossil fuels
Clean energy is going to win. It's just a question of when.

Putting aside that solar farms are rarely (if ever) created by clearcutting forests,

Acre of forest sequesters 1-2tCO2 per year

Acre of solar produces ~400MWh

You come out ahead as long as what ever energy source you're replacing is at least ~5g/kWh

Natural gas plants are like 400g equiv/kWh

It's a window into a time when capitalism pretended to be uncomfortable with greed, and it reads socialist today because it no longer does
It's a Wonderful Life is certainly a very humanist, compassionate movie but anyway saying it's somehow 'socialist' has literally reduced 'socialism' to 'rich people bad' which is a case of 'yes but there's more going on here kate'

Iowa is also like Wyoming. Most rural people live in towns. I didn't know that in WV most people *actually* live outside of towns.

In the lore of this universe is the North Pole some kind of European Union style organization? Like why would it have regulatory power to impose unfunded mandates???

Something i've been thinking about: I feel like a lot of the coal country revitalization efforts were focused on specifically coal miners, because they need retraining for new jobs, but the vast majority of people in coal country are not former coal miners.

Tbh I find the dismissiveness around "historical accuracy" in the costuming/set design in the Odyssey kinda dumb because it's nice to have things that give a glimpse into a different culture.

However, the Odyssey is not about classical Greece, so it's hard to say what the culture should be

Insurance companies, are (1) the only agents in the healthcare system with any incentive to keep costs down (2) entities with a fiduciary duty to ensure people get as little care as possible

Takes on them differ a lot depending on whether (1) or (2) is higher salience in your brain

"universal healthcare can't happen" is such a funny take in a country where we already have universal healthcare for the most expensive segment of the population to have healthcare for, old people

The only reason anyone thinks smoking is "cool" while vaping/zyn aren't is that smoking is basically dead so people associate it with old movies and they associate vaping/zyn with frat bro types

Ok but like actually why can't you throw car batteries into the ocean, the ocean contains 2.7e15 kg of lead, a car battery has 8kg of lead, so like to change the lead content of the ocean by even 0.01% you would need every human to throw 4 car batteries into the ocean, all of which 100% dissolve

Gotta say, I like all the shows in this franchise, but Return to Paradise is the best one of the bunch, by a lot!

It does a really good job of showing clues making the mystery solvable by the viewer but still surprising at the end, a thing most detective shows don't do

Tbh in general I think a lot of "high-minded" liberal discourse, in a lot of domains, is people treating game theoretically sound responses to things as emotionally irrational. Eg vindictiveness, negative polarization, etc
Tbh I think attempting to rig the BLS should be responded to by absolute contempt for anything the BLS publishes, as a basic matter of game theory
tbh my favourite type of account on here has to be the "BLS has fallen, now we must rely on payday loan company stats"
