Just finished reading Mr. McManus's essay: www.currentaffairs.org/news/why-fas...

And it is excellent. Highly recommend. It certainly makes me hunger for a leftist who can energize us sufficiently to wrest back control from the - I call them - fascists running the USA.
Why Fascists Always Come for the Socialists First
Contrary to right-wing myths that the "Nazis were socialist," fascists despise socialism and want to destroy it. Here's why the left poses such a threat to them.

Half the Answer #64: Trent and Caitlin catch up with political science assistant professor Matt McManus. They discuss the narratives surrounding resistance in the twin cities, the right's ideology of cruelty, and the power of regular people to puncture false claims from the government.

Trumpism is a personality cult. This is bad because the cultists have no loyalty to anything beyond Trump and no principles outside of pleasing Trump. But it also means Trumpism is unlikely to have much force without Trump himself.
House Oversight hearing on ICE opens with the rules:

"It is also a clear violation of the rules of the House to make statements that might personally be offensive to the President or the Vice President of the United States."

She's right. I'm annoyed the article poses as an "I told you so..." But not for the reasons given.

Plenty of libertarians opposed Trump from the beginning. But plenty didn't, and still don't. The Libertarian Party invited Trump to speak in 2024.

My piece for @jacobinmag.bsky.social on Thomas Mann and the appeals of fascism to elites.
The resurgence of right-wing populism has set the table for the far right’s renewed fortunes.

Published in 1947, Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus offers a guide to the mythmaking and rejection of reason that continues to animate authoritarian politics today.
