So it feels very weird to be talking about anything other than the ICE occupation right now, but the ARCs of my new book arrived on Saturday. I'm going to do a giveaway.

One out of 12 rams is uninterested in females. Deemed “non-procreative" by farmers, they're typically sent to slaughter. German farmer Michael Stücke rescues the gay rams. His company Rainbow Wool, sells fabulous wool products from his flock of gay sheep. rainbow-wool.com

As sitka plantations are to forestry, data centres are to housing. ##speirgorm
"Electricity demand from data centres has grown from 5% of national electricity demand in 2015 to 22% in 2024.

According to Eirgrid, by 2034, it is expected that this, along with any other new technology-related energy drains, will rise to 34% of electricity demand." Source: @thejournal.ie
So, we can completely miss our climate targets but continue to build these energy sucking monstrosities. This needs to be stopped. Little to no employment, massive quantities of land and ridiculous damage to our air, water and habitats. #SpeirGorm

I've done quite a lot of getting up and even made the bed but now I absolutely have to rest before I can do the rest. Maybe I should read a book. I used to do that.

I am once again reminding you all that the UK government introduced an Online Safety Act that is effectively a porn ban on most adult porn websites, but is dithering over banning a website that is actually creating child porn.

Now this is an idea I can get behind.
Dreamt @maureenjohnsonbooks.com ran a chain of dignified diners where you paid what you could and those who needed it always ate free. It was called MJ’s Place. It was the way things should be. The menu was simple and high class. Pets always ate free. Every Friday was a murder mystery dinner theater

this became very clear to me in the interview I did for this piece. Nat Raymond, who designed satellite observation to predict atrocities, concluded "“documentation is no substitute for political will.”" The satellite system predicted accurately; the international community failed to act on it.

I'm writing jokes and making posts on topics nigh ephemeral,
I got here with an invite and I find Alf hog hysterical,
So keep it light I have no time to argue ecumenical
hope the UK follows through and blocks twitter but bsky is simply not prepared for becoming disproportionately British

You should leave X if you are a company because if you don't your social media staff will definitely end up encountering CSAM and then you and/or they may be held criminally liable.

Really listen to it.

One interesting thing about hospital strikes is that temporary employees brought in to replace striking nurses ALSO aren't looked at as scabs, because they're absolutely needed to care for the patients, which striking nurses care deeply about. The leverage is how much those replacements cost...
Nearly 15,000 NYSNA nurses from Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian are on strike today because greedy hospital management have given frontline nurses no other choice.

If the British (or any government) cannot or will not enforce the law against tech companies who produce and disseminate CSAM they may as well shutter OFCOM and go home.
Some concern about X inside government - and whether Ofcom will be able/ willing to use powers decisively.

Biz sec Peter Kyle said govt would "of course" consider banning X & Ofcom "must" keep people safe.

But it has only fined a couple of firms so far under OSA powers. Will it finally show teeth?

Roblox obviously assures everyone that the photos are immediately deleted, but

A) How the photos of children are shared and processed is regulated under GDPR.

B) I'm not sure I entirely trust a platform with such an atrocious record on child safety.

This is a great moment for people to stop engaging with Roblox.
Roblox has introduced mandatory age verification for its users. Children must upload a photo of themselves to Roblox with the image then processed by an American Age Verification Company, Persona.

I am *very* curious to know whether this is GDPR compliant.
Roblox to roll out compulsory age checks for chat
Roblox has said it will roll out compulsory facial recognition or ID checks from next month for players wanting to access its chat features.
