Econ 101 midterm question: Based on what you know about risk pools and adverse selection in healthcare markets, will giving people money instead of giving them money to buy health insurance lead these markets to function more effectively, or will it just lead more people to be uninsured?
One of the things you learn about the law after a bit of study is how much legal compliance relies on socializing the law’s legitimacy. When law becomes purely transactional, it’s just another racket competing with all the others for dominance.
Graduate seminar did a deep dive on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense yesterday. At the line, “in America the law is king,” they (14 students from 6 countries) burst out laughing. I've been doing this for 35 years and this is the first time that was a laugh line.

I gather this happens only in hardware stores where they sell plywood.
Trump: "I don't know what could be worse than Portland. You don't even have stores anymore. They don't even put glass up. They put plywood on their windows."

To Donald Trump:

Stop using military troops and ICE to invade and disrupt American cities.

Stop calling your political opponents “enemies” of the US.

Stop attacking the 1st Amendment.

Our troops and our nation deserve better than you acting as a petty tyrant.
Trump: San Francisco and Chicago, New York, Los Angeles… We'll straighten them out one-by-one. It will be a major part for some of the people in this room. It’s a war too. It’s a war from within

To all of our LDS brothers and sisters in faith, sending prayers in this time of great sorrow and unspeakable tragedy.

My wife is from Anaheim, and me nearby, so we feel you.

cancelling Disney+ and Hulu is well and good but it’s not a huge hit on an individual level

but Disney adults? people who spend real money at the parks? you guys can make a dent, call ‘em up and tell them your vacation is postponed until they pull their heads out of their asses
Heard from a friend at Disney+ that there are multiple levels of freakout internally, both from internal dissatisfaction, concerns about subscription cancelations, and of course the big one: concern about a boycott spilling over into parks and cruises.

The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city.

This is not a joke. This is not normal.

Donald Trump isn't a strongman, he's a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.

You're right about that. As with any other big city. But POTUS has taken a special shine to Chicago. Go figure.

Do you actually read real statistical crime data or do you just like colorful pictures bereft of context (Sorry for using the term "bereft").

These are the crime-ridden scenes I see on my evening stroll in Chicago. Send in the guard!
