Any short track speed skating race without a crash seems suspicious to me, likely rigged.
I certainly believed the combo of Pop Rocks and soda was killing hundreds (thousands?) of Americans each year. I'm sure I would have pegged it as one of the nation's leading causes of death, along with sharks and electrocution.
“Bizarre things you firmly believed when a kid” is one of my favorite genres and I firmly believe we all have excellent examples if we can remember them

I really don't think there's anything more painful to watch in any sport than a figure skater glitching.
