A few weeks ago I was talking politics with a local, highly straight, bartender.

All the sudden he said: “Well, I think a big part of the problem is that so many of the people who would’ve been our progressive leaders died of AIDS & can’t help us now.”

And I’ve thought about that every day since.

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

Your regular reminder that if Southern whites voted like Northern whites, the deep South would be the bluest region in the country
I understand why a lot of white liberals are like, fuck the south, because they think about the people in power who are mostly white conservatives. But that is only because of Jim Crow, voter suppression, a lack of real funding for Dems there

ok, but his claim doesn’t even select for #3. if you’re trying to find the best mathematicians, and some of the kids most able to create exemplary math research need extra time on tests, including an arbitrary time limit actually *excludes* talent. nobody times you when you write papers irl.

A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

Yeah, I think this is an important point to keep in mind with the right wingers who are all in on Epstein - they’re in because they think it’s proof that Jewish pedophiles run the world, and you absolutely do not gotta hand it to them for that
There are 2 things happening with MTG:

1) She's an HR nightmare. Her schoolyard bullying antics mean no one, regardless of politics, wants her in their workplace.

2) She's a full believer in antisemitic conspiracy theories, and from that point of view Trump looks like part of the conspiracy.

WOW did i ever think this was about ttrpgs for a hot minute
Running away from the party is, at times, an acceptable tactical decision but it's also fundamentally a poor strategic one
ive said repeatedly that this clearly isn’t a one simple trick to winning states back. Osborns and McMullins level candidates are rare, and where does that leave the state party when these candidates just lose and leave?

also the self-censorship people on here just sound Iike naive children to me

you can in fact viciously and highly effective criticize evil people without giving them needless points of vulnerability to get you back with

i am dreadfully irritating on social media, and i have never caught any kind of a ban on any kind of a platform.

I think i got a single comment removed on tiktok once because it violated community standards (I called someone "idiot".)

free speech, fair consequences, make your decisions, no ragrets
all I’m gonna say is that I am a life-long slightly edgy poster and I’ve never caught a suspension or a ban anywhere - because it is in fact quite easy to avoid crossing the “this joke could possibly be construed as a violent threat” line on social media

you'll never convince me otherwise
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

as always, the answer continues to be 'the broken norms of professionalized journalistic ethics'
Why the fuck is this framed as “teenager chose to prostitute herself and ruined the career of innocent congressman”
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

I'm starting to think that what news consumers think is newsworthy and what reporters think is newsworthy is very different and not in a way that reflects well on reporters.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.

If this thing costs comparable to a PS5 it's basically a no brainer for like five people I know who want a console-like system but who want to play games with me on my PC
What will Valve's Steam Machine cost? That's the big question
Steam Machine looks like a console, but is primarily competing with PCs — which means Valve can go in a lot of directions for its new hardware

I continue to disagree with this. The goal of mass detention is mass deportations. A private prison company leasing 100 beds to ICE gets paid the same if the beds are filled by 100 people for a year each or 1,000 people for a few days each. They don't earn more with long-term detention.
It's not about deporting them. It's about detaining them indefinitely and enriching Prisons for Profiteers and the grift the Convict in the Oval Office collects per detainee.

I’m fine conceding that a bunch of nebulously incriminating Epstein statements do not a story make, but in that case neither does the Biden Parkinson’s nonsense, or literally any component of the various Clinton/Wikileaks pseudo-scandals, or tons of other right-wing stuff the paper has laundered

I don’t think every actor in this industry is a good one but I do feel like the NIMBYs here are literally missing the forest for the trees, and the consequences of their actions are just going to massively drive up costs and entrench the industry actors they detest while destroying the environment.

Truly there are few things and few industries more efficient than the modern data center and we don’t really accomplish anything by having fewer of them aside from less redundancy (ie more unreliable service) and greater centralization. That this likely uses *more* power and water is unavoidable.

I genuinely don’t think people realize that datacenters and what they accomplish (hyperscalers) are genuinely a far more efficient way to do the computation required for modern life. Limiting datacenters is not more efficient and does not consume less power for the same amount of compute.

To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?
