How awful. This is outright health disinformation, lying to the American people. Not only is there massive evidence showing no link between vaccines & autism, there’s not even a plausible mechanism based on what we’ve learned about the genetics of autism, some environmental exposures in pregnancy
HEADS UP: CDC website now officially asserts that vaccines may cause autism.“Studies supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities.” Also says the “vaccines do not cause autism” header remains b/c of an agreement with Cassidy.

for some reason the original skeet was deleted, but it pointed to this CNN article:

More fundamentally, no map or line will ever be able to delineate ‘safe’ from ‘dangerous’ - risk is a continuum and we need to move to system that recognizes this instead.
The defense that this was just an adjustment based on better data is self-serving BS.

We do *not* know what the 100-yr flood level is - even if we had perfect DEMs.

Even if we had perfect historical data, non-stationarity means we don’t know what the level is *now*, let alone in the future.

First, that the camp owners successfully petitioned to move the flood map line away from the most at risk cabins is unconscionable:

This is heart-wrenching.

A few things about the FEMA flood maps though…

This.

We're not doing a very good job of reducing CO₂ emissions from burning fossil fuels, but maybe we can do something about other greenhouse gases like CH₄ from leaky gas wells and pipes, belching cows, and rotting organic matter, N₂O from agriculture, and HFCs from refrigeration.

Astonishing to stop and realize that, at any given moment, bands of masked men armed to the teeth are storming churches and daycares, terrorizing entire communities—and that most of the country's political establishment barely blinks.
The Trump Administration killed over 383 active clinical trials and directly harmed more than 74,000 Americans with lasting future impacts for the public at large.

Trump' s war on scientific research and public health is costing Americans lives and livelihoods.

Yellow snow warning:

"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow."
Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place over the next couple of days ⚠️

Many places won't see much settling snow with icy roads more of a hazard. Heavier falls of snow are likely in northern Scotland and parts of northeast England ❄️

1,019 glaciers have disappeared since 1973 in Switzerland! ✝️

1st nationwide assessment of vanished glaciers:
>40% of the glaciers inventoried in 1973
~13% (47±3 km²) of total glacier area loss! 🧊🔥

But, as it is based on the latest inventory (from 2016), the actual figures are far much higher! 📈 😰

yeah, that's wrong. I'll ping them to get a note appended or something. The paper cited is talking about constant concentration commitment, not zero emissions.

This is a bit of a nit to pick, it’s a demonstration with a single model. In and of itself it doesn’t change anything. If they’d only done 4xCO2 it would have been equally impressive & as marginal. Acting like 8.5 has cooties is a little silly.
I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

so anyway I plunked myself down, read the entirety of E.B. White's 1940 essay "Freedom" for Harper's Magazine, and put it up for free on my Patreon. enjoy (or don't, I'm not your dad).

there's an intro for context, and then the reading starts at 6:35 www.patreon.com/posts/e-b-wh...

What you are arguing here? Are you supporting Pielke's claim that no climate change is detectable in under 30 years (because the IPCC said so)? Or are you saying that detection of some changes in some places for some variables might need 30 years? The latter claim is not disputed by anyone AFAICT.

The best question from the moderator, Janna Levin, was when LeCunn noted that we would be building safeguards into these AI systems to prevent bad things from happening, asked "Who is 'we' in that context?". The answer was not very satisfying.

As has been noted before, LeCunn was very pessimistic that LLMs are the way to go to get reasoning ability in AI, but Brown seemed to think the progress was huge and continuing. Nobody mentioned their inability to get citations or arithmetic correct though... 🤷

I was at an event yesterday with Adam Brown and Yann LeCunn, and Brown claimed that the latest LLMs are doing better math (and poetry for some reason?) than human mathematicians (or poets). That seems somewhat contradicted by examples like the one here:

I wasn’t wrong.

we started off with a mild La Niña and that explains most of the difference with 2024, but there is likely a systematic shift higher due to aerosol decreases.
