Wow. New followers! Nice to meet you all.

I'm Liz. I'm a lawyer who lives in Louisiana and practices in criminal post- conviction settings. I'm a trans woman, and I'm an Episcopalian. My Christianity related posts are marked with ⚓, if you aren't in a spot for Christian posts right now.

A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected.

If a bat touches you and you're not controlling it like this with thick gloves and knowing what you're doing

You need to get a rabies vaccination and I'm deadly serious.

If a bat *touches* you.
PSA for any bat-friends inspired by this post: thick work gloves like the ones being worn in this picture are absolutely necessary before attempting to handle a bat! Do not let it anywhere near bare skin! And if it appears ill or is acting erratically, do not approach, just call a pro
Hey if I'm late on my next deadline its because I just spent 2 hours swabbing this guy with oil to save him from a moth trap

Relatedly, religious organisations need to stop doing youth events where they present (explicitly or implicitly) a different vision for holiness for men vs women.
"I want a new great masculine idea to challenge that of the Right--"

shut the fuck up. the new great masculine idea, and the new great feminine idea, are the same: girls and boys and theys can be exactly who they want to be and not an iota different

Okay sure, here is my esoteric interest: it is called #CitiesSkylines2 where I blend the real world of planning with the virtual world to create a mixed reality.

Currently running a parallel series on both my blogs and YouTube on Planning in both Aotearoa NZ, and in my CS2 cities

The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. The posts of the influencers is the herbicide of the Church. In this essay, I will...
On my annual winter e-break I came to the conclusion that basically every facet of our lives has gotten worse because a majority of people now primarily "live" online and thus only experience the world in the abstract. The loudest voices online/in culture aren't actually living real lives anymore.
There should be a sort of 24 hr soft ban on this site that, when logged in, asks for your location and then indicates the distance and directions to the nearest park or outdoor public place

We must, *must* reckon with the terrifying responsibility of our power.

You don't have to love that power to acknowledge it's reality.

Nobody is going to do this to us.

Cite playground law all you, but Goose v. Gander only holds if the gander is weak.

The world's response to Trump will make more sense when you realize this.

We'll fix this domestically in some way or it won't be fixed.

This is getting some heat because of the admittedly quite biased framing of the Reuters story, but the basic sentiment — that these big news agencies have experienced people on the ground, while the take makers mostly do not — is completely accurate.
It’s old-fashioned to defend mainstream journalism these days but some of the most reliable reporting from people actually on the ground will be the AP and Reuters the next 24 hours. Your Substack journalist writing takes will be using frontline reporting from them.

Today a young nonbinary friend talked about being screamed at and threatened with violence on the subway with their (also trans) partner on New Year’s Eve. No one was hurt, but they’re shaken up.

I share this bc people are telling me that it’s unreasonable not to compromise with transphobes.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Well, yes, and the best artist you’ve ever seen probably isn’t going to be able to competently advise you about how to set up your 501(c)(3) to minimize potential liability, because we live in a world where people do different things.

I don’t understand this line of thinking.

It’s the most powerful online sexual harassment tool ever invented and it’s driving people insane with parasocial relationships but the most prominent critics lie about water use.
"And I never say no"

We need to have a serious talk about the way "AI companion" apps not only prey on the vulnerable, but are priming their users to ignore consent and to conflate love with control.

We need AI regulations across so many sectors, but this area is particularly horrifying.

I will say that "generative AI" has gotten so blurred as a term that things like the procedural generation that games have been using since forever (MINECRAFT, TERRARIA, DWARF FORTRESS, DAGGERFALL) are sometimes getting lumped in there, which is silly, but yes, technicalities aside, this.
I do not want it in a box, I do not want it with a fox, I do not want it till I die, I DO NOT WANT FUCKING GEN AI.
I don't want gen AI in my browser.
I don't want gen AI in my PC.
I don't want gen AI in my art.
I don't want gen AI in my games.
I don't want gen AI in my music.
I don't want gen AI in my movies.
I don't want gen AI in my books.
I don't want gen AI in my cart.
I don't want gen AI in my LIFE.

This has been the single biggest improvement to my bsky usage since I started blocking people.

It's just "following" but instead of like a thousand people it's something along the lines of 80. I still browse following, but having a small group of people whose posts I reliably enjoy is very peaceful

Blood pressure appears to have stabilized. We're hoping the cognition issues are downstream of what is apparently a serious kidney injury from hypovolemia, and that as kidney function is restored (God willing) cognition will return. He was lucid for a bit, but then sundowned very hard.
He’s been moved back to progressive care (a step down from ICU in terms of intensity). Family is all here. Now we wait.

Prayers appreciated. This is one of the big days for miracles, I’ve been informed. We could use one.

Dad’s blood pressure crashed again repeatedly this week, this time likely due to insufficient hydration and nutrients (he’s been eating only a little bit). He started drinking more yesterday and BP got in a good spot but crashed again last night. His vitals are stable, but he’s largely unresponsive.

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

May all of you find comfort in the love of family and friends this night.

The court denied a stay. It did not issue an opinion on the merits. The former has strong implications for the latter, but this sort of reporting is inaccurate and irresponsible.

This kind of thing is so… baffling to me. It’s an algorithmic problem with Reddit but it’s also just frustrating that cosplay is seen as inherently sexual or a pipeline to pornography, AND held to a double standard that illustrated fanart isn’t.
