In case you missed it: I’ve got a new (warning: somewhat intense) story on @npr.org about all the ways faith leaders have pushed back against the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign this year — including clergy directly confronting ICE agents and police. www.npr.org/2025/12/24/n...
How the clergy has rallied against the Trump administration's immigration policies
Religious leaders have rallied against the Trump administration's detention and deportation of immigrants. Clergy are filing lawsuits, accompanying migrants to court hearings and leading protests.

"In a country where white Christianity has become a weapon of authoritarian violence, anti-ICE nativities re-center the reason for the season: Christ’s humble beginnings amid political violence," writes Emma Cieslik.

Anti-ICE Nativities Are the Reason for the Season
The churches putting up these nativities are declaring that they refuse to be complicit in the very same violence that threatened Jesus at his birth.

Listen to the people reminding us that concentration camps and torture are immoral and wicked, and also that the conditions in our own nation’s prisons are similarly terrible. Incarceration is dehumanization.

People have historically, and rightfully, seen the evil of Guantanamo, Abu Gharib, and now CECOT for what it is, but I wish more people would also see the evil in our domestic prisons too. How we treat our most vulnerable, including prisoners, really sets the tone for our whole society.
I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

Bad news on this front. (Especially since most of the non-violent offenders with whom I served time were there on pretty basic drug offenses.) bsky.app/profile/jool...
When you watch this know that US Federal BOP uses extreme heat, threat of sexual violence, withholds basic medical treatment and medicines, and many other similar horrors, right here on US soil. In lovely Danbury, CT. @humanrightswatch.bsky.social @blumenthal.senate.gov @chrismurphyct.bsky.social

It’s the longest night of the year and the last night of Hanukkah (for family-historical reasons we celebrate Hanukkah). I’ve got my Solidarity is the Only Way Home shirt from @theradr.bsky.social and friends coming over for latkes. Let’s make some light.

I am wildly curious if this SFWA LLM-friendly Nebula policy is intended to allow certain specific works in (and if so, which ones do they want to be sure are included?), or if not, what sort of LLM use-cases they are imagining authors are using. Like, I'm actually curious about the reasoning!

Bluesky tonight is neatly divided between trans people and family members appropriately angry and freaking out and everyone else who has barely noticed.

See, a totally abolitionist response to police killings is to make it impossible for cops who have killed someone, for whatever reason, to work as cops ever again, anywhere. That's not carceral, it's not even PUNISHMENT. We could put our efforts here, rather than (rare, often failed) prosecutions!

Like I was saying last week! “There’s a simple truth here that I feel the larger publishing industry has forgotten: if you make cheap books, you will bring in more readers.”
The era of the mass market paperback is coming to an end, and that’s not good thing for anyone.

I jotted down some thoughts about the history of the format and why its end isn’t a great sign for the publishing industry: transfer-orbit.ghost.io/mass-market-...

We allow only specific whitelisted videos and channels on YouTube Kids, and it was SUCH a relief when I learned how to do that. The algorithm goes to trash, all the time.
I'm really, truly not trying to be judgmental here. I know how tough it is to keep children away from screens. I fought that awful battle for many years.

We tried to set limits or whatever. It doesn't work. Just ban YouTube. It's a radicalization machine.

Police and prisons destroy the fabric of families, what makes us human.
Mothers Activating Movements for Abolition and Solidarity argue that the policy replacing physical mail with digital scans strips incarcerated people of dignity and creates new questions around privacy.
Illinois prisons don’t allow physical mail. Mothers are pushing to restore access.
Members of the advocacy group MAMAS argue that handwritten letters matter, especially to people who have been incarcerated for years.
