Abolish ICE
"A modern-day concentration camp ... People have been killed by the staff here." Irish citizen Seamus Culleton has been in ICE detention since September, despite having a valid work permit and his own business in the US.

As I sometimes put it: what kinds of social spaces will this build? (Good thread on an awful reality)
One way to judge a society's investments is asking: "what kinds of people and relationships will this investment create?" Sit with this question. Investment in repressive bureaucracies has become so normalized that we are desensitized to how far away from the best parts of humanity it takes us.

I pulled together a small list of body camera-related resources, just in case anybody is curious about how abolitionists think about them.

There is no "fixing" detention centers. We are knowingly killing people as a policy choice.

This makes me happy:
I used @hannahnpbowman.com's preaching resources to introduce the concept of Migration with Dignity Sunday and to talk very plainly about repentance, welcome, and care. People were so grateful that I addresed the violence head on. (I'm sure some weren't, but they didn't tell me).

Thanks, Hannah!

Boy I wonder why progressive LA voters aren’t excited about Bass and her encampment-clearing
I ran out of room, it was "I helped her clear an encampment that she wasn't able to do"

They should have all the Doctors on The Muppet Show. Possibly at once. With Julius Strangepork appearing as the 67th Doctor or something.
I saw someone mention Ncuti Gatwa and my brain went NCUTI GATWA ON THE MUPPET SHOW

Important. Especially after the horrific detention ruling from the Fifth Circuit last night, which I’m still working to understand. Concentration camps for children and people claiming asylum and more.
My latest: Applauding community defense is not enough. We are organizing resistance to a concentration camp regime. The front lines are everywhere.

(Plus resources and my must-reads list!)

Jesus Christ (is in these camps). Terrible. Terrifying.
AWFUL news tonight. This blesses the “mandatory” detention in the 5th Circuit without bond (and little chance at habeas) of every undocumented immigrant who originally entered across the border, no matter how many decades in the past.

It will fuel ICE’s push to transfer people to Texas immediately.
BREAKING: A 5th Circuit panel has backed ICE's mass detention policy, a decision that clears the way for the administration to lock up people who are in immigration proceedings

It's a 2-1 ruling
Majority: Jones (Reagan), Duncan (Trump)
Minority: Douglas (Obama)

Ah yes, the crime-fraud exception to loving your neighbor
Speaker Johnson writes '"every person is subject to the governing authorities" and "those who resist incur judgment" (Rom. 13:1-2)' in his argument that Matthew 25 does not bind Christians to defend immigrants.

So Christians must always obey government?

So Christians should have obeyed the Nazis?
I didn’t expect this to take off like it did, otherwise I would have provided the full text of his statement. It doesn’t make it any less theologically and morally incorrect, but here it is anyway.

It's a moral injury, yes, just like people who help with executions. Turns out, concentration camps are bad for lots of people idk what else to say.

The National Prayer Breakfast was always idolatrous; anyway, a reminder that Christians must seriously undertake the moral obligation of prison abolition (and sadly most still don’t)
Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast: "One of my favorite people, President Bukele ... he operates rather large prisons. Very strong prisons."

Making the rounds this week among Christian progressives: new poem by Rob Hardy, poet laureate, Northfield, MN. Yes, the protests and all the work being done to throw sand in the gears and provide aid to those at home and being released from Whipple are a kind of liturgy — “work of the people.” ⚓️

The great journalist Victoria Law sent her latest article to two incarcerated women; the article is about survivors of domestic violence who are incarcerated for what they did when resisting their abusers.

And, well, read the rest for yourself:
Mailed my @boltsmag.org article to 2 women at Framingham:

"Today, we both received the article. Unfortunately, neither of us received it in its entirety. We each received 3 pages of print, but different parts of the article & we can't seem to put one complete copy together between the two."

There is so much here 💔
NPR covering your 1st period & the story of how you got pads—is a lot, esp. at 12. 😞

“simple act of obtaining a menstrual pad for a pre-teen's 1st period turned into an underground operation involving a faith leader, multiple neighbors & a clandestine network of mpls volunteers.” shorturl.at/dlJf6
How an errand for a 12-year-old immigrant in Minneapolis became an underground operation
Some immigrants in Minneapolis have said they're scared to go out because of ICE agents across the city. When one 12-year-old needed to run an errand, it triggered a network of underground volunteers.

The problem is the system. Not the individuals.
One of these men is an eight-year veteran of the Border Patrol, the other has served with CBP for a dozen years.

This is not down to inadequate training. This is not the output of a system that can be “reformed.” This is a malevolent system that needs to be shut down and dismantled.
BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.
