Here’s a list of things your church can do to grow deeper into being a community of solidarity:
Things churches can do to become communities of solidarity 1. Find an ongoing relational action you can take as a community (not with an outreach partner but work if the parish), which you encourage all your members to take part in and which uses your property during times it's empty 2. If your work is mostly through outreach partners, begin actively recruiting people in the church to join those efforts, personally and in an ongoing way, and build a circle/support group within your parish for ongoing relationship-building among the volunteers you are bringing to your partner organizations from your parish, so that it's not individuals working but a ministry clearly rooted in the community. Pray for these ministries and every member involved in them by name at Sunday worship 3. Offer ongoing opportunities specifically aimed at parents of young children, including work children can engage in and childcare, so parents don't have to choose between caring for their kids and being part of the work. Make sure these opportunities are ongoing and build relationships with other parents, not just one-time events. 4. Offer ongoing opportunities and circles/ support for them specifically for elderly and disabled people, including mask requirements and rides to make them accessible to people who want to participate 5. Require masks at at least one of your Sunday services for an accessible option, and put air filters in your spaces 6. Preach liberation, going deep to understand the systemic roots of the oppression you're seeing and being willing to take radical stances grounded in the gospel 7. Care for each others' needs within your congregation. No one goes hungry, no one gets evicted, no one struggles to find childcare, no one is left alone without visitors. 7. Include congregational mutual aid in your budget 8. Learn and study so everyone is equipped for solidarity work. Build interfaith and institutional relationships in an ongoing and relational way through support groups/ chats/circles 10. Donate your property to groups in need. Never leave it empty and unused.
