"went viral" is seriously downplaying the role of bad-faith actors
The lecturer in question is our colleague in children’s literature studies. She is a brilliant scholar and from all accounts a gifted teacher.

This ruling is infuriating… at the end of the day, it is our students’ education that will suffer.
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.

It did not "go viral". It was intentionally filmed and disseminated using a network of coordinated bots, amplified by an algorithm designed to spread this kind of content quickly. This was a harassment campaign, intended to silence everyone. Call it what it is.

Texas A&M won’t reinstate fired lecturer despite findings
A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

For some ppl, there is a genetic component to such conditions that require medication. Exercise, diet, and meditation can take you a LONG way, but if you still need the meds—take them!
I ain’t wanna be 40 years old on blood pressure medication. I know a couple folk who are and that was never meant to be my ministry.

My 1st apt in Oslo wasn't a dump, but it wasn't NICE until I added things. The super was an ogre who tried to charge me cause I got unstuck from the prewar elevator before maintenance arrived on a Sat. morning. When I moved out I took my new fridge, chandelier, etc.

I aspire to this level of petty.

No woman I know in academia would be surprised by this, but its good to see it documented like this, I guess.
Experimental evidence that students are more likely to contest grades when they are delivered by an evaluator with a female-sounding name.

"These findings suggest that women in evaluative positions face disproportionate resistance when delivering negative assessments."

GenAI being fundamentally based on a rejection of consent is obvious, but it's not as obvious that it destroys the inhibitions of the people who already reject consent.

It makes them act in public the way they used to only act when cornering their employees by the punch bowl or in their office

I still can't get over how anti-capitalist It's a Wonderful Life is. Imagine arguing that people have a right to live in a clean, nice multi-bedroom house and now some slum tenement!

"A therapist whose work I admire often says: ‘life is a choice between what hurts and what hurts worse.’"

Estrangement (going no contact) is the choice that hurts the least.
The holidays are hard when you're estranged from your family, but it gets easier, and you are not alone.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

One of my students forgot their copy of the books the day of the exam. So I lent them my copy to do the exam. We are not heartless. We are doing what we maintain a relationship of learning.
I went back to blue books for one class. It was open book notes (printed out) because it was taking too much of my own energy as a person to deal with students using genAI to write their responses.
Does anyone else bristle at this framing? WSJ says blue books are “torturing” students with hand cramps, and “nobody likes them.”

Listen, students have been outsourcing everything to AI and cheating their way through college. Blue books should be celebrated as a return to authentic human learning.
