Welcome new (and not-so-new) followers. I’m an author & freelance journalist focusing on incarceration, particularly women’s incarceration. My latest book, CORRIDORS OF CONTAGION, examines the Covid-19 pandemic behind bars—and the continuing fallout of prisons’ punitive responses.

My personal guiding question remains this:

What have I done to alleviate suffering today?

Convinced that being able to answer that affirmatively each night is what has powered me through the past few years, and lets me sleep at night.
As daily goals, "stop fascism," "defeat evil," and "save the world" probably aren't going to get you anywhere, and might leave you feeling overwhelmed and helpless, but "work towards building something good" is always achievable, concrete, and useful.

Now that MDC Brooklyn is back in the spotlight because of Maduro, I’m re-upping this thread I posted from Sept. 2024 detailing a string of stories I’ve written about the place. I’ve written a number of stories since, but this is a good primer for those with interest.
Good afternoon, Bluesky. Now that there's more attention on MDC Brooklyn, where P. Diddy is locked up, here's some of my past coverage about conditions there.

The MDC made our P1 in July, when we got a video of a brutal stabbing, and the jail's anemic response.

Shocking video from inside Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center shows MS-13 members stab a man 44 times, attacking him for an agonizing 37 seconds before a lone correction officer arrives…

thoroughly irritated (again) that a prison system, which scans incoming mail & does not give the original to incarcerated recipient, prohibits address labels.
If a prison system is scanning all mail & only letting incarcerated people read on tablets, what difference does it make if I use an address label, drip coffee on the paper, accidentally smear wet nail polish on the card, etc?

NY is having a bad flu season. More hospitalizations last week than any week on record.

Health authorities are encouraging everyone aged 6mo+ to get the flu vax (it's not too late).

Find a provider here: on.nyc.gov/getvaccinated. You can filter for sites where there's no cost for the uninsured.

Thread: I spent the end of 2025 interviewing women incarcerated in CA & NY about their hopes for clemency. All have been imprisoned for 10+ years—some for decades. All have transformed their lives despite the many obstacles in prison. In both states, the process is opaque & some are losing hope:
