Inside Of Me There Are Two Moods
gonna need to dive into these, especially given my somewhat disappointing results from friends’ recs
I've noticed a microgenre shift in SF over the last year - or possibly just in the books I've come across. Specifically, a bit of a boom in big concept space opera books working in the Banks/Hamilton ideaspace. Meaning SF that simultaneously delivers a strong action storyline against a backdrop

where'd the day go

oh right, it's annual "spend 5 hours downloading the past year's worth of tax forms, pay/account/bill statements, lease, and benefits docs, do a personal finance spreadsheet update, and file taxes" day

deleted the rah rah post because it was starting to escape my meager corner of bluesky and i'm really just here to make jokes and be a reply dude

but nevertheless, take heart y'all

Sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Drizz here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place
I hope this guy comes back. He was good vibes. There was something comforting about knowing he was out there, doing his thing

This is so obvious that it shouldn’t need saying, but the reason people across the country are outraged with what’s going on in Minneapolis is that *they can see it*. That means filming, it means press. If you’ve got someone with a big audience on your side, that’s a resource to use!

(it is a bit funny that having a conservative and traditional self-presentation totally scrambles people’s understanding of your views. ask me how i know about this.)

the ideal for a social democrat is to do radical shit but come off as nice guy doing normal things
It also benefits leftish pols that scan as centrist to the public. Andy Beshear has been admirably principled as a centre-left gov in a deep red state, but the GOP consistently failed to convince the public that the aw-shucks white guy with Lego hair was a Communist revolutionary.

I've really enjoyed the show's casual disrespect for the Legion.
when people talk about not wanting to vote for "the lesser of two evils"

Okay 95% of the time I’m sufficiently terminal to know what weird rw nonsense or personal obsession led to his confused brain drippings but this one leaves me at a total loss
I’ve said it before: I know they’re trying to avoid sanewashing through a combination of direct quoting and dry understatement, and that’s better than just ignoring his deranged babbling, but I don’t think “dry understatement” is really what the moment calls for.

honestly the best thing he could do is this, the thermostatic reaction’ll turn 65% of the country into frothing pro-housing yimbys for a decade
Trump: "I don't want to drive housing prices down. I want to drive housing prices up for people who own homes."

2/3 of American households own their homes and homeowners vote more than renters. He’s just saying the quiet part of the bipartisan consensus out loud.

ah yes, a cut so deep you end up bleeding out on air

also, what
so i used a phrase on the podcast the other week that was indelibly seared into my brain when we read Beloved in HS English, and i have had like half a dozen people ask me WTF since.

perhaps "take some foreskin to Jesus" is a less common expression than i thought it was

i keep drafting a “here’s why both the ‘do something!!’ crowd and the ‘they can’t’ crowd are off-base” thread and then delete it because i don’t actually want that smoke

i’m right tho

this is good advice

then again, my block threshold is “saw you post something fuckin’ stupid”
the worst weeks on here are the ones where people who share goals and share values convince themselves that people who don't agree on tactics are evil rather than just being fuckin' idiots.

try to stop at "you're a good guy but you're being a fuckin' idiot" as the outside bound imo

Classics of the genre:

Window of Opportunity (Stargate SG-1)
Mystery Spot (Supernatural)
Life Serial (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Cause and Effect (Star Trek TNG)
White Tulip (Fringe)
For Groundhog Day, you could watch the movie, but you don’t *have* to watch the movie. Watch any time-loop movie or show—perfect for a holiday when it seems like winter will never end.

Also: make tiki drinks, to recognize that someday it will in fact be summer.

when i had allergy tests done as a kid i got the “hey bob! get in here, you gotta SEE this!!” reaction

and lemme say, i may have only been 7 but that seemed a little unprofessional
I’m getting allergy tested right now—the kind where they prick your skin with like dozens of different allergens and see which ones produce a hive—and the nurse came back to look at the first round of 40 and was like “oh, uhhh, looks like basically everything” so I get an A+ in being allergic today

jerome powell-adin
We know Powell is a Deadhead but has anyone ever asked him if he plays D&D.
A: we see signs of the unemployment rate stabilizing. We may be seeing the beginning of the resolution between those two things. The LORE [sickosyes.png] is that when GDP and the labor market data conflict, the labor market data is more reliable.

the median** podcaster is a moron and you must vigorously police any normie friends who take an interest in podcasts to protect them from the bad ones

**podcaster georg @peark.es and the rest of the normal men are outliers and should not be counted
Throw back to when I explained to Huberman that searching "New York Times" in a grants database just gave him all grants that included the words "new" "york" and "times".

is kristi noem the blair witch, what is this
I'm starting to think the Trumpist mastery of propaganda is failing them. The DHS agents posing this way makes it look like they're ashamed of themselves.
