Salesperson: and as you can see, the jacket has this wonderful red lining

Me, an urban planner, eyes narrowing: it has WHAT
For a contemporary example of this, look at the extremely precise parking requirements in the ITE Parking Generation Manual.
A type of practice that I find interesting historically is the rigorously untrue. Astrology, for instance, was often a very tightly defined practice with a seriously requirement of learning: it just wasn’t actually real.

Nothing but respect to Mary and Mark Stevens for saving the Oasis, a beloved queer arts space. This kind of gift should be a model for Bay Area philanthropy.
Exclusive: S.F. drag club Oasis saved with multimillion-dollar gift
The LGBTQ cabaret and club was slated to shutter after New Year’s Eve, but will now continue, Oasis owner D’Arcy Drollinger confirmed, calling it “a Christmas miracle.”

Urbanism is really about being able to yell stuff at people from the comfort of your home instead of your car.

I used to live very close to a Costco. One time I was buying two handles of tequila and nothing else (there was a buy two, get $10 off promo). The woman behind me in line looked at my cart and said “well there’s a romantic dinner for two.”
What's an insult you'll never forget?

there should be a movie where a woman from a small town begrudgingly goes to the big city for the holidays and falls in love at first sight with ethiopian food
In the hallmark movies where the lady goes back home from the big city, they never talk about the game she must play pretending that the ethnic food in the small town is anywhere near as good as her family thinks it is. Just grimacing while eating mid Thai food.

I‘d be happier if I ran the world and the people who run the world seem like they’d be happier if they were mildly popular on social media, so perhaps we could work out some form of trade.

Stopped in the Richmond Target this evening and shared it with the descendants of African slaves, Asian refugees, English settlers, and Hispanic immigrants - all doing that most American of activities: last-minute Christmas shopping.

That's the America I swore an oath to support and defend 🇺🇸
I love the east Bay Area. People of different races and religions live and work together to build the American Dream. We in liberal society take this for granted but the national rise of extremism stemming from online content seeks to take this away from us.

The American Beauty of the East Bay
Americanism is facing its biggest challenge from extremism. The people of the Bay Area show why its worth fighting for.

My buddy Zak is a horse trainer who also likes wrenching on cars and he daily drives a Honda Odyssey because it’s great for doing errands, his ‘68 Mustang isn’t reliable, and his F250 is overkill for anything other than pulling the horse trailer.
we rented a chrysler pacifica for our trip down to see my folks after christmas and i now totally get why people like minivans. this thing rules.

Husband came back from Costco with a bag of limes so I got inspired and made Mai Tais.

Special thanks to the good folks at Bitters and Bottles SF for putting me on these funky rums. If you’re in the Bay Area, they are THE spot for weird liquor.

TCW is sort of the paradigmatic example of why you should pursue excellence in your craft over wealth and acclaim, because if you get the latter without the former, odds are you’ll still be miserable.

Friction is good and one of the most consequential tasks facing the designers and managers of social-technical systems in the 21st century is putting it back in in the right ways and right places.
I think one of the lessons that the huge success of congestion pricing in NYC is that charging a nominal upfront fee- even one far less the the levellized cost you are paying for elsewhere- is very good at cutting off the bottom 5% of bad behavior that makes things worse for everyone.

While this website’s lack of algorithm can be boring, I will happily take it over the Threads algo that shows me some variation of “Agree or disagree: people over 65 with paid-off houses should not have to pay property taxes!” post literally every time I open the app.
