this is one benefit of having spent most of my life being part of long traditions/organizations
like, from high school to college orgs to work, basically all of them have been situations where you are a custodian tasked with continuing the work done before you, knowing that others will follow

Part of what I think of as growing up, though maybe that’s not a fair framing, is accepting that you aren’t particularly special. Not only can a robot do what I can do, so could another person, actually many many other people, and worse!

anyway, while i am not naive enough to pretend we ever truly lived up to our ideals for various professions (politicians, policing, journalism, academia, business, religious leaders), i do think even minimal lip service toward civic virtue was load-bearing and needs to be restored
the broader issue is, of course, funding/incentives. there’s no pay in straight news journalism; what little remains must fight for the scraps, and so it’s disproportionately sensationalism, access journalism, or opinion/punditry.

I get a lot of hate for this view and in turn I'd only ask if you've ever had a pie as good as a typical cheesecake. The answer is no, you have not. Cheesecake invalidates the whole pie category. Hell, regular cake barely survives the cheesecake onslaught on the strength of carrot cake alone.
The dirty secret of pies is that they have the lowest ceiling potential of all sweets. Your best pie is merely fine. Your median pie is bad.
