Every year on Christmas I write a thing. This year I'm sharing it.

Eye lasering, GLP-1's, *not* woodworking, laser cutters, life at The Phone Company, dog pictures, and so on
Another year: 2025
For the last ten years on Christmas Day I've written a retrospective on the past year. This year's is a public post.

I am also, by the way, calling for a TV movie/series/docudrama/footsteps-of Pompey because he is the key figure in the decades after Sulla and he is just very interesting.

He didn’t leave battle memoirs like Caesar did, and his end is more sad than Shakespearean. But this is my tragic guy.
I watched the first episode of this BBC series this morning, and these shows are often very amusing.

It’s adequate, leans anti-Caesarean, good cast of proper historians talking heads. Tom Holland is the one with the most time, but why is pol Rory Stewart doing the Cato bits?

It feels a bit like the sex ed problem. The students are gonna do the thing. Some people might wish they wouldn’t. Reasonable people (excluding the loud minority of extremists) can argue the disagree impact on health. But they _will_ do it, so how do we educate so that they don’t get hurt?

This is not a value statement: in league of legends you have to play the game you *are* in, not the game you want to be in.
Academics literally cannot make Gen AI go away. As in it is not possible to make it happen on a political, legal, and technical level. We do not and will not command the massive violence necessary to make chatGPT or Claude disappear. Responsible pedagogy grapples with the fact!
No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.

That’s about one-third of the total number of TLAMs the Navy was able to procure in 2024, by the way.

I just read a blog post by a historian I genuinely respect about perceived inabilities of LLMs. More and more I want to take a couple months off, sit with them, and drill point by point through all of this "well an LLM can't understand context" and other user-error stuff.

The thing that bothers me about our post-pandemic COVID discourse is how much of it isn't about how to do things better next time, it's playing Monday morning quarterback. It's not about learning, it's about spending years trying to win arguments that people had online from March 2020.
this is a good response to In Covid's Wake

what Kucharski gets right, crucially, is holding in tension the fact that the shutdown was brutally and inequitably costly, and the fact that not doing a shutdown would have been even more brutal and inequitable
