Great piece on the common naming of pets as "Mochi" in the Bay Area. I've named my pets after food items often since I was a kid, from Butterscotch the hamster to Licorice the dwarf rabbit.
because sometimes it's fun digging into our weird little cultural habits... I've been wondering why I kept running into dogs named Mochi in the Bay Area, so I asked about a dozen local pet owners why they chose that name! click thru for so many pet pix!! www.coyotemedia.org/why-we-cant-...

Nice piece from @nberlat.bsky.social today on the importance of artists taking a stand against Trump's authoritarianism.
"The Kennedy Center is threatening to sue Chuck Redd to enforce the tyrannical precept that we are all, always, everywhere, the king’s performing monkeys. Are our voices our own? Or do they belong to Trump and Trump alone?" — @nberlat.bsky.social
The regime wants to turn artists into performing monkeys
But freedom of speech includes freedom to not praise the king.

I've had my criticisms of both Whitehouse and Durbin, who are AWFUL on internet policy, but glad to see them at least calling out that there's absolutely no reason Wiles should have "seen the Epstein files" and her claiming she had should be seen as a scandal.
"Please be kind enough to explain when and where and under what authority you gained access to this material.”

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse & Sen. Dick Durbin write letter to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, asking how she's "read the Epstein files"

My senior kitty, who spends 70% of her day in my lap, may have fallen more in love with my lap when I positioned it next to the fireplace for the majority of the evening. (ps, our HVAC is out)

NEW: In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, plaintiffs who live in housing across the street from Portland's ICE facility today filed a preliminary injunction motion to bar the feds from shooting tear gas, etc., when not necessary, because it keeps entering their homes.

Delicious green curry cocktail at Tallboy! This one goes down waaaaay too easy. 😁🍸 For folks not in the Bay Area, Tallboy is a martini bar that also serves fancy vegan hot dogs. 🍽️

Excellent film criticism here
Took some time to think about what I needed from the movies aiming to engage with the current political landscape this year. Shout out to both my fantastic editor Clare Lombardo and the truly dreadful ELLA MCCAY, for helping me crystalize my perspective.

'Raising questions' isn't enough. The best films of the year took a stance
Now is not the time for subtlety, nostalgia or neutrality on screen.

The U.S. government just banned five people from entering the country because it doesn’t like their speech. This ban, according to the State Department, is necessary to protect free speech.

If that sounds insane to you, congratulations on your reading comprehension.

📽️ Good Fortune: Angel Keanu is, of course, charming, and so is Keke Palmer, playing the workers' rights girlfriend of a gig worker facing homelessness. But while this body-switching plot has solid points to make about the poverty trap, it's more heartfelt than humorous, and thus, a snooze. filmsky

📽️ Anaconda (2025): Reviews are harsh, but I was amused by this "reboot attempt" of four friends who made movies as kids whose filmic dreams faltered as they aged. I did not set expectations high for that comedy premise, or the lurking snake always nearby and ready for a snack. Silly fun! filmsky

📽️ Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man - Love that the format of this mystery series has changed with #3. Of course, Benoit Blanc is still on hand to solve the case, but this one closely follows a small parish dealing with the murder of their cultish leader. A satisfying spiritual ending for me. filmsky

Update: can confirm this is Mel Curth’s attorney. Please beware of scams, and give money to your local trans organization or nearest convenient trans person instead.
Mel Curth hasn’t announced a fundraiser yet, please don’t fall for scams. This does appear to be her attorney’s account, I’m seeking confirmation.
Please be aware of possible scams! My client, Mel Curth, is not seeking any donations at this time. She is grateful for your support and instead requests folks that want to help to donate to the local organizations of your choice!

📽️ If I Had Legs I'd Kick You: A tense film with a close POV of an admirable mother with a cool head coping with complex circumstances. But the longer you watch, the more you learn that "coping" is quite a stretch to describe how she's handling life. Well done. #filmsky

📽️ Sentimental Value: Impressive acting & nice imagery but with a plot that felt rather sparse. Family trauma, creative burdens, reconnecting with a parent, sibling support: if you're feeling strong emotions about these themes lately, I suspect you may connect better than I with this film. filmsky

I'm trying not to cry in front of the people I'm with but I remember how Ryan White was isolated, bullied, and forced into the spotlight for having HIV/AIDS but chose to use that fame to advocate for people like him to be treated with dignity and at all. What an unbelievable legacy.
