hey y'all! I'm Soleil Ho, a writer who goes deep into food, pop culture, identity politics and mass media. I've written about: an edible wasp festival in Japan; the hollowing-out of the COVID welfare state; and how Stop Asian Hate got warped into pro-carceral politics. I also write cookbooks!

Chinese bakery sandwiches are generally pretty awesome—in 2000 when I moved to SF I used to stop at Grand Mission on the way to work to get little $2.50 tuna sandwiches for lunch. So good and affordable

The viral $3.50 fish sandwich everyone's obsessed with — a Chinese bakery’s fried fish bao — is drawing 2-hour lines in San Leandro. Is it the new Filet-O-Fish? @soleilho.com tested it with everything from Puerto Rican pique to jalapeño pickles to find out.

The viral fried fishwich in San Leandro is great, @soleilho.com writes. But what IF you took this sandwich to a specialty store in Berkeley that has a wall of condiments, and went wild?!

In 2016, the last time the Super Bowl came to the Bay Area, SF residents vandalized statues, threw a nationally-covered protest, and bemoaned the high cost to taxpayers. Why are things so quiet this year?
I break it down in @coyotemedia.org.
SF Hated the Super Bowl in 2016. A Decade Later, What’s Changed?
Ten years ago, protesters took to the streets to slam San Francisco’s Super Bowl City and call for an end to homeless sweeps. As the game returns to the Bay this week, why are things so quiet?

Unwelcome statues, beaches full of trash, homeless sweeps, and a $5M price tag infuriated many in SF when the Super Bowl came to the Bay Area in 2016. 10 years later, as the big game circus returns, the city is quiet. @nuala.bsky.social asks, what’s changed?

4/ AND we have something else: We’re a newsroom that Bezos can’t destroy. Executives at The Post made a strategic decision to abandon D.C. — a free press threatens the political aims of the powerful. We might still be small, but we can promise you that we exist solely for you, the people of D.C.

🧵 1/ We’re devastated about the layoffs at The Washington Post, which are gutting D.C. reporting. These journalists are an incalculable loss for our city. The 51st’s mission has always felt urgent, but now we know it needs to kick into high gear.
