The UN climate change conference (COP30) having rooms shut down both to flooding and an extreme fire is a bit metaphorically excessive.
🚨If you are at #COP30, evacuate the Blue Zone immediately.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

An interesting thing about the Armenian genocide is that the perpetrators were promptly assassinated when it became clear the legal system of the time was inadequate to bring them to justice.

We’re gonna get thru this, and people should be nice to the cohort, but we’re gonna have a mini-generation of people among us who are generally less literate and comfortable around the written word than the rest of us on each side of them.
it is an almost universal sentiment among the college professors I know that the last few years have seen massive, worrying declines in literacy among new students that do not compare to any previous worries/experiences

It'd be great if the next Dem primary included somebody who made administrative burden one of their key issues. It's a huge problem for most of the population, esp around things like our health care system, and largely underrepresented in media
I actually tried for two years to economize ruthlessly my healthcare outlay, despite my condition, and BCBS is good enough at its job that the only difference between Gold and my high deductible plan was on the HD plan I couldn't see any doctors lol Cost exactly the same
Cassidy: "If she goes and gets 2 types of shampoo & one is a dollar cheaper, she'll get the cheaper one & the other lowers their price. Once you give her the power of making the decision, she's gonna shop -- that begins to save her money and squeezes waste out of the healthcare system."

I think the Comey etc. indictments show the basic shape of Trumpism pretty well. The goal and peril is to replace all forms of rule making authority with shameless partisans. So the judiciary is stopping some of it because it's not yet overtaken by them, but the media is hiring Bari Weiss bc it is.

it didn't even really provide me with any new information but that one email between epstein and some other random rich elite saying "when will the madness end" about the metoo movement felt like a key unlocking my brain that will explain every unforced institutional capitulation we've seen

Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

All of this to say: people are coming down extemely hard on the question of how the NYT as a whole has handled the Epstein question has less (though not nothing!) to do with Epstein and more to do with a general loss of trust in the paper in general

new NYT thing is describing stories as generically as possible to make it seem like they weren't sat on. oh now if a guy emails a reporter about old girlfriends that's supposed to be a news story?
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.
