criminal courts are by a decent margin the institution that has held up best to Trump's attempt to turn us into a competitive authoritarian state and the chances that they completely fuck this up are higher than a lot of people think
the thing is that what they want for Maduro is a show trial and the venue they are trying that in doesn't do show trials
Remember these people fucked up the prosecution on sandwich guy. I am somewhat cynical they're gonna manage this!

fundamentally this is an argument that John Roberts could have been tricked into forgetting what party he supports
If Jack Smith had gotten started on January 21st 2021, Trump would be in prison, and at the very least we'd probably have a marginally more historically normal Republican in the White House.

The wild thing about Fetterman is that so many of his boosters have flipped over to Platner, an even more obvious plant, & said "OK I was wrong to support the guy with a put-on working class affect there, but THIS guy with a put-on working class affect..."
Fetterman continues proving those of us who said he's a waste of a senate seat right. Could have had better PA, but some of ya wanted Bum Ass Grimace...
Fetterman: "I don't know why we can't just acknowledge that it's [Venezuela operation] been a good thing what happened ... I think we should really appreciate exactly what happened here."

But really, people are like "look at what McConnell did as minority leader!" Yeah, that was for 4 total years, 2 of which Dems had 50 seats and the other where dems actually got shit done because we had 59 votes.

Otherwise you're thinking McConnell as majority leader.

yeah i prefer this site to the other one now, but without actually good moderation, this site is going to be continued to be plagued by the weird blowups we saw in the past couple of days
I hate to say it but the clubbists won. Short of something drastic on Twitter forcing an exodus, I don’t think people are going to give this site another chance.
I want this site to beat twitter, and for twitter to evaporate. For that to happen, people you hate must have a more pleasant experience posting here than posting there.

A minority of this site decided instead that they want it to be their little club, so that's what we have.

Yeah again, not telling you how to post but the number of people I see both enthusiastically celebrating “running off” someone and decrying people still being on X is not zero. You gotta choose guys!
I find it hard to square the preciousness about "why would someone ever stay on Twitter?" when everyone on this site knows that the community here intentionally chased off lots of people.

The student loan stuff was worse than that. The fact that they loudly (and persuasively!) let it be known that they thought Biden's moves were bullshit directly led to a bunch of GOP state AGs to sue the whole thing, and now the system is *much worse* than it was status quo ante!

This is one of the wildest deep-sea mining stories to me.

Paleodictyon is a 500-million-year-old trace fossil from an unknown organism. In the last 50 years, we've found their honeycomb traces on the seafloor. There is a living organism that has been doing its thing for half a billion years.
Recovery of Paleodictyon patterns after simulated mining activity on Pacific nodule fields - Marine Biodiversity
Since the late 1980s, various experiments have been conducted in polymetallic nodule fields of the Pacific Ocean to assess the potential environmental impacts of future mining, specifically in two are...

"look the average salary for low skill entry level work is now $15-17 even in bumfuck WI, and higher in other areas, and these real wage gains are reflected in the bls data!"

"fuck off, biden has done nothing on the literal minimum wage, and charts and bls data is just capitalist lies" everytime.

Same with "I will happily pay more for my delivery driver and food worker to have better wages"

Turns out that was bullshit too!
don't even get me started on bidenomics running a hot labor market basically winning the 'fight for $15' without having to fight through republicans on literally raising the minimum wage, and those real wage gains showing up in the data, and it just made them madder.

Biden actually did a lot of shit that internet lefty types said for years would cause a massive swell of support for Democratic policies and by the end of Biden's term everyone hated it and no one was particularly interested in defending him personally or the policy regime he put in place
If you want Democrats to start acting like Republicans, then Democratic voters/supporters are going to have to start acting like Republican voters/supporters, and that means not nit-picking every single word that comes out of Dems' mouths when there are much bigger issues to message about.

The problem here (*waves*) is that a lot of people want the actions of the minority party to be more extreme. They want, and I’m only slightly exaggerating, Chuck Schumer to storm the Bastille.

The view that we’re in a crisis is not, wrong. But the disconnect between where normal people are is big
we'll get another bite at a shutdown in a few weeks and that's a spot where maybe he can make a play.

but we're running into the very basic problem that if you're the minority party you need bipartisan action to win a majority of a vote.

if you want the Senate to do something, Senate Republicans must do something.

People are dunking on this but I'm not really sure what plays Schumer has other than to try to peel off Rs.
Schumer: "Republicans must -- if there was ever a time, they must step up to the plate. This is the time. And if they don't, they're gonna feel the heat from their constituents."

My favorite example of this phenomenon, BTW, is that I have had multiple people over the years claim Bernie Sanders was a champion of marriage equality, when he actively campaigned against it in his home state.
I've said this before, but Bernie's greatest super power is, much like Trump, that his follower's simply ignore what he actually does and just imagine he supports whatever they do.
