technology is not some gnawing mindless thing that behaves of its own accord. for each awful thing occurring today, there are ~6 to 12 people (men, really) who are actively making choices to ensure this happens. they want you to think technology is like the free market, filling gaps. it is not.
I appreciate the poetry here and it the last sentence is a satisfying payoff but I wish that they would spend less time characterizing Grok as a trickster demon that’s been let loose on the world and more time stating flatly that Elon can send one email and end all of this in 30 seconds.
Grok didn't learn this on its own. It was allowed to learn it. Other AIs do not do this. If Grok is made in Musk's image, we have to ask what kind of man Musk is? The answer: a man who at the very least sees nothing wrong with child porn.

The actual best case scenario in terms of an actual budget is Jeffries and Schumer make a credible shutdown threat behind closed doors, get what concessions they can before people get dug in and the fascist propaganda machine spins up, and the 7 worst and/or retiring Dems vote for cloture on it
With such a suddenly narrow gop majority in the House there might be an opportunity, but I'm not sure it looks like a multi-week shutdown.

There is a very pervasive belief on here that “Dems trying to get policy concessions” is identical to “Dems giving up”; at the same time, “Dems not trying” is posited to be “Dems fighting,” though I’ll be honest I’m skeptical that would actually satisfy the complainants
Starting to think your obtuseness is not feigned. Republicans “controlling Congress” does not mean Democrats have to roll over for them.

It does appear that people have a very strong intuition that any Dem strategy will be explained in full on either the “Hates Democrats” or “Nazi Pedophile” websites, and that the absence of such a public microblogging explanation is proof of a lack of seriousness, resolve, and effort
it seems to me that some people are very mad that they don’t have full access to the true intentions behind every political strategy, or just that they don’t know how everything will actually play out

I will also say that “I think the Dems should do another shutdown” and “I hate the coward Dems for only doing a 42 day shutdown last time” are mutually exclusive positions. Either you get credit for trying or trying is pointless, pick one
I have no idea if the Dems are planning another shutdown but this is functionally identical to what they were saying before they set a new shutdown record

“I am mad at Dems for voting for Rubio for Secretary of State in Jan. 2025” and “I am mad at Dems for making a serious and sincere attempt to stop any cabinet nominees at all ” are identical statements. I understand that because this requires abstract thinking it is beyond most users of this website

You are entitled to whatever your feelings are I guess but it is just flatly true that the current Senate Dems under Schumer are being substantially more obstructionist in the minority than the Republicans in the 111th Congress under McConnell

It is true that the overwhelming majority of federal defendants plead guilty but a lot of people on this website seem to miss that this is because almost all those people are factually guilty and the DOJ historically does not indict without overwhelming evidence of guilt
People also conflate state and federal criminal proceedings in a way that is understandable for a layperson but extremely analytically erroneous

TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

The minority party just fundamentally doesn’t have a mechanism to deal with the majority party ceding all power to the executive, which is why yelling at Chuck Schumer to do better posts might not actually be a great use of energy

miller's feelings of inadequacy are the only well-grounded beliefs he has
this is small comfort given he has state power and i don’t but i am struck by what an obviously weak and fragile man miller is. a blubbering piss baby whose entire affect and personality is an attempt to make up for his profound feelings of inadequacy
MILLER: The US is using its military to secure our interests unapologetically in our hemisphere. We're a superpower. It's absurd we'd allow a nation in our backyard to become a supplier of resources to our adversaries

I need to emphasize that the mere fact that you have a thought does not in itself justify sharing that thought
Being born and raised in Jim Crow America is a valid reason to suspect that a judge will wrongly convict an innocent black defendant.
Besides very expected cognitive decline, even the rare fully cognitive 90 year old still grew up under racial apartheid and the overt criminalization of blackness.

People appear to have a real strong intuition that some combination of Diane Feinstein not showing up to votes because she had dementia and RBG being replaced by a 50 year old Republican is broadly applicable to the elderly across all fields and situations and it’s not really a good intuition
If a senior status judge is still on the criminal wheel I suspect he’s quite alright managing a courtroom
