hmm, I suppose I'm a techno optimist but maybe not in the most straightforward way
February 10, 2026 at 1:10 AM
Yeah I love that we can never know this. Will the guy in charge of the panopticon choose to search my social media and deny my grant? I can never know and will just think I'm bad at writing grants.
February 9, 2026 at 11:36 PM
A funny thing is that even to say this is not consequence free for me because I need government grants and these weirdos scan social media
February 9, 2026 at 11:13 PM
I know there is no one on this site who supports all this, so this is not to convince but to build normative consensus
February 9, 2026 at 11:12 PM
There is so much barbarity coming out of the government every day that there simply can’t be a straightforward return to normalcy on the other side of this. Someone must be accountable

I’ll also think of BotNS every time I eat a Pringle! There’s so much joy in this fact

What
February 9, 2026 at 8:40 PM
The use of obscure is purposeful. You can use AI to add care to your work, this isn’t an anti-AI claim
February 9, 2026 at 7:15 PM
Let us make a refinement of this claim. The claim is “do not use AI to obscure the level of care that went into your work”
Let us make a refinement of this claim. The claim is “do not use AI to obscure the level of effort that went into your writing.” That’s where the dishonesty lives, not in the use of the tool
Think that it's dishonest to not tell someone when your writing is AI written, the same position I hold on ghost writing
February 9, 2026 at 7:14 PM
Yes perhaps all I am saying is “do not deceive me about care”
February 9, 2026 at 5:46 PM
I agree with all of that. I’m really using effort as a stand-in for a thing I don’t know how to name
February 9, 2026 at 4:59 PM
Yeah “never get blocked” is the thing I tell all my students. Figuring out productive stuck vs just stuck is a skill
February 9, 2026 at 4:58 PM
I wonder with what speed LLMs can chase culture. If we shift to awkwardness being cool, can we get that into them as fast as the culture can shift?
February 9, 2026 at 3:58 PM
Just incredible levels of “yes and“ being achieved here
February 9, 2026 at 3:55 PM
Thank you for as always using the prompt to make something more interesting than it started with
February 9, 2026 at 3:54 PM
Your point earlier helped me refine this!
February 9, 2026 at 3:13 PM
yes, I think that’s right
February 9, 2026 at 3:13 PM
I like that framing! Yes, it is very specifically that I don’t care about maximizing productivity in this domain, in the same way that I don’t want to watch two chess engines play
February 9, 2026 at 2:48 PM
Yeah hence the refinement. I don’t agree with folks that the use is inherently slop
February 9, 2026 at 2:10 PM
I and others are going to think on your essay. So we are making an agreement that the thought is worth it
February 9, 2026 at 2:06 PM

Some folks have a very sharp distribution of skills and these can still work when paired with the right collaborators or funneled into the right way. But also, a lot of ML areas operate on math intuition more so than on math itself
February 9, 2026 at 1:53 PM
This is a very vulnerable and important essay, pointing to the fact that there are so many ways to contribute to computer science research
I wrote about how I don’t know math but still am somehow a successful computer scientist. I have strong feelings about this. But I also want to understand.
