I've embarked on a quest to read the entirety of Doonesbury in order. The cringe-factor of Trudeau's self-insert character being an incompetent womanizer in these early strips is made up for by the sheer amount of "yesterday's satire is today's news"

Also we should have human operators again. If you want to scam call someone you should have to explain it to someone else on the phone every time you do it and ask to be connected.

Tonight I learned I've been sleeping on the Chad Mitchell Trio. Did not realize they had a snark on par with Ochs. I hope I live long enough to do an American update of this one.

Obviously I don't write for games (yet?? I guess??) but dialogue is absolutely the most fun part of writing and the fact that people are going "oh yeah I just streamline it no one cares about that stuff"

You have no soul, you have no spark, and you have no understanding of human enjoyment
Buy a solo indie dev's game because I want to support them.

Find out it uses OpenAI to write "non-important NPC dialogue".

I wanna take a minute to thank all the authors who have been engaging in the book piracy discourse. I have sophisticated heuristics as to what music I will and won't pirate but the corresponding book heuristics have been difficult to develop and those posts have been very helpful in developing them.

Leftism doesn't mean "I get other people's labor for free because I'm poor" and Capitalism isn't a synonym for "selling things." At this rate, online leftists are going to polarize themselves into fighting wars for Anthropic and OpenAI bc they've "nationalized art."
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Tbh I wish my parents had had this attitude towards physical affection. As a kid I was constantly bullied into hugging distant relatives who Id never met and never saw again, and with 20/20 hindsight I can see how that planted the seed for some of my later struggles with intimacy...
Ahh yes, a totally real trend for which we totally have evidence

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

People are usually astonished by my breadth of knowledge about the American Revolution and American music of the 1920s-60s but those are just topics where I crossed the Dunning-Kruger peak and landed in the valley below. The only topic I'm truly an expert on in Bruce Frederick Springsteen.
One thing about the word "obsessive" is that the internet teaches you there is no ceiling.

I give a great deal of my pop culture attention to The Beatles and Star Wars. Someone unacquainted with them would think I'm obsessive. A brief glance at the fandom tells you I'm a rank amateur.
I wouldn't bother getting it if you're not an obsessive fan, unless you don't have the other Anthologies, but as a bonus on the box set of the others it's definitely worth having.

It's objectively strange that Chrono Trigger is the name of a JRPG series about time travellers dealing with a crisis, and Time Crisis a series of light gun games.

JFK was killed by Big Poultry for his duplicitous refusal to feast on their annual bribe three days earlier. Johnson, keenly aware of the operation but covering it up to save his own head, bravely enshrined Kennedy's mercy as a national tradition.

It's interesting how the ongoing civil war has changed my reactions to crime reporting. Stories that used to illicit an "they're cherry picking stories to make things sound more dangerous than they are" now inspire a "fuckin hell those ICE thugs are just gunnin everyone down."

I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.

I'm sorry but I will not vote for a man who considers "Solo" (2018) a major Star Wars film while completely omitting the greatest feature length Star Wars film "Battle for Endor: An Ewok Adventure."
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Every story I ever hear about celebrities meeting a muppet involves them making eye contact with the muppet only, and almost completely failing to acknowledge the person or people operating it.
A national bond that transcends race, religion, politics and class is our shared agreement that the Muppets are real. They are real people with jobs and lives. Listen to that crowd screaming. They know they're seeing a celebrity.
