ANALYSIS: Ohio Democrats show when a bad map is a good deal
Aaron Kleinman writes, "Ohio Democrats just gave up a congressional district to Republicans. Good on them."

My triumphant return to blogging at @heartlandsignal.bsky.social is about (what else) how the bad map passed in Ohio was a good deal for Democrats heartlandsignal.com/2025/10/31/a...
Again, I don't know how this was supposed to end other than with a district wholly in Salt Lake County. Anyway, Utah now has a safe Democratic congressional district.

the fun thing about the BBC story is that I can't actually read about it for more than couple of minutes at a time because it makes me feel too insane :)
The worst you can accuse Panorama of doing is making a misleading edit – and I’d dispute that! – to make *a point that was true*.
The programme aired without anyone seeing any issues with the edit. It was on iPlayer for a year without complaints. Donald Trump *did* incite Jan 6th.

Tory culture spox demanding the BBC "grovel" to Trump is baffling. Who is this supposed to chime with?
Just a bizarre line that no one who doesn't use X would ever think.

The funniest thing to happen now would be for Joyce Carol Oates to win the Nobel next year for her tweet. The least funny thing to happen would be Elon getting so incensed that he buys Warner Brothers and makes the Animaniacs anti-woke.

Meanwhile, people unconstitutionally seized or brutalized by ICE agents can’t sue them because there’s no private right of action for them to do that.
Buried inside the deal to reopen government is a provision that would give Senators private right of action to sue for millions in damages over their phone records being analyzed by Jack Smith's team.

Senators whose phone records were sought by Special Counsel Jack Smith would gain authority to sue for millions in damages under a provision buried in the Senate-advanced deal to reopen the government...

I feel like we're in a weird world where the average Dem partisan, engaged voter is better informed than most of their representatives
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

bar trivia is pretty good, bowling or pool or whatever would also be fine, this is mostly a well-solved problem
as the husband of a mahjong addict, dudes need to identify an activity that can be done relatively easily in groups with minimal financial commitment so they can get out of the house for 2-3 hours on a school night, have two beers, and shoot the shit with their buddies.
It won't be mahjong tho.

Elias Portolu by Grazia Deledda is similarly bad but nobody goes a-nutting

When they said Keri Russell wasn't hot in The Diplomat. I got so mad I had to go outside.
What’s your all time favorite Hollywood Homely fail? When a woman is meant to be unattractive but she’s gorgeous. Thinking of how Safety Not Guaranteed has a key moment where a man’s ex is in the script old and no longer attractive and she’s a knockout who the movie still plays as old.

I used to have to go to Austria for work in the fall and YouTubeTV options remind me of that. Trying to figure out how to ask the bartender to put on a Purdue game in German.
Honestly this new version of YoutubeTV is fine. The Big Ten and Big 12 are our most important conferences, and UConn is must watch

Follow Your Heart by Susanna Tamaro is some saccharine bullshit, Chicken Soup for the Soul ass book
The Distant Lover by Christoph Hein is some classic East German alienation, good but it made me just want to read Stasiland or watch The Lives of Others again instead.
Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz is dated and clumsy, but you have to admit that a story about Christians in Nero's Rome hits hard right now.

ironically what makes star wars stuff best is when it is 'something else, but also star wars'
e.g. Andor, a British political thriller but also Star Wars
the Mandalorian, an episode-of-the-week Western but also Star Wars (when it was good)

This was very good, especially if you've read the play but never seen it performed. And yes, there's a little Easter Egg for Millennials in there.

my best argument for this is that when Schumer was assembling a cave team last spring made up of retiring D senators who would never have to face the voters again, he was on it. it would have been hard to dodge, certainly! but he was on it.
