Days start getting longer on Monday

For everyone traveling home from #AGU25, here something fitting to listen to, the final message dovetails nicely with one of my highlight take-home messages from this year:
"If you don’t stop, they really can’t stop you."

Shout-out to the bagpipes player welcoming attendees to the last day of #AGU25 in New Orleans

Definitely going to this dance today. From 8-9pm there is a beginner lesson, which is a great way to get ready for the dance if you haven't done it before. The social dance starts at 9, and will be with live music. Walkable from #AGU25 . www.maisondupuy.com/live-music/ www.maisondupuy.com/dining/

Still not sure who did this, but it’s really good advice for cities.

This week CGS researchers are at #AGU25 to share research from our modeling and Indonesia programs. Learn more about how CGS's modeling and country climate work to support climate ambition in the NDC process: country-ambition.cgs...

Nice sunrise today to #AGU25 in New Orleans.
If you want to hear about the economic impact of the rise of low cost electric vehicles, go to room 271, session GC22C from 10.30am-12 today

Any lindy hop dancers 💃🕺 who go to #AGU25, and are on bluesky?

There seem to be 2 live music events this week, tonight (Sunday) at The Allways Lounge (45 min walking from NOMCC, see below)
and Thursday at Maison Dupuy (29 min walk, www.wwoz.org/events/1276446).
Let me know if you go!
Sunday Swing Night at the Allways Lounge
Dance lessons, then live music by some of the cities best local bands! Put on your dance shoes and come hang out where the locals do!

Train travel also very convenient in that you can continuously post while traveling... that is a minus for the road trip option (although with an EV, the few extra minutes while stopping and charging help, I used all of those to text with friends and family...)
I’m taking the Amtrak from Atlanta to New Orleans for #AGU25! Follow my journey here, which will be 12.5 hours if there’s no delay 🚊

Highlights were lunch in Knoxville with great colleague and friend David McColllum who unfortunately is not coming to #AGU25, and breakfast at a pieceful river, and the stars through the panoramic roof.
Full AGU scope covered: EV, seeing a Geminid shooting star, geological phenomena... 5/5

EV camp road trips are great, as you can heat the car without much noise while standing. My first night had lows at Natural Bridge in 20s F (-5°C), but I was comfortable and rewarded with the sunrise.
Normal charging breaks are only a bit longer (~20 min) than you anyway need for yourself...
4/n

I left Friday after dinner, and will arrive at 3pm today. I did 200 miles on Friday, 600 yesterday and ~260 today. Even 600 was ok, despite many charging stops as the battery is relatively small and so winter range is only ~200 miles. The car is rented for 3 months via turo for 700$ a month 3/n

While 2 years ago when I did my other US multi-state EV roadtrip to Colorado in a Model 3, now you can luckily do this with any modern electric vehicle (EV) and I even managed to not rely at all on superchargers, but used a variety of charging options (right now a local one for 6ct/kWh) 2/n

1000 miles behind me, 53 left on my EV-camp-roadtrip from DC to New Orleans to give a talk on macroeconomic effects of EV policies at #AGU25

Interested in macro energy systems and GDP effects of climate policies -> GC22C-02 on Tuesday 10:30 CC271

Interested in EV (camp) road-tripping -> thread 1/5

*Busy* Monday for me at #AGU25

NH12B-05 11:12-11:22 Applying the Swiss Cheese Model to Wildfire Risk Management in the Built Environment

TH15B 6-7 Town Hall Hurricane Katrina 20 Year Later

then RUNNING to Atmos Science section Student/Early Career mixer to talk cat modeling 7-8:30

He gets 350 km of range which lasts him a full day driving in Sao Paulo, not least thanks to recuperation going down its many hills. So far he charges for 2 hours during his lunch break but still loves it. Many nice features for the passengers: USB charging, cup holder, sliding door, coat hanger. /2

First ride in an electric taxi powered by Brazil's very clean electricity (see country-ambition.cgs.umd.edu/brazil#elect...). Just wow on how much space this offers inside for what from the outside even for European standards is a compact car. Very cheap according to yhe very friendly Rogerio 1/2

China's formal submission of its new climate targets leaves out the commitment made in 2021 to gradually reduce coal consumption in 2026-30. It does reiterate the commitment to reduce carbon intensity, which is currently badly off track, but doesn't provide any progress update.
The article doesn't say it, but this cool solar forecasting software uses no large language models, the thing people usually think of when they hear "AI." It uses a fairly simple convolutional neural network that's readily trained on a laptop. No data centers or LLMs involved. Research paper here:

Hey all you might want to check your "require alt text" setting - mine got turned off and it sounds like it's happened to others, too (presumably with recent updates).

And if you've never done this, now's a good time:
