it pisses me off SO MUCH that pattern recognition in images or multivariate correlation characterization or whatnot is now lumped in with the most useless thing ever, statistical text generation, and not only lumped in but apparently Sam's stupid text model is the standard bearer for all tech now

i see some reactions to this like it’s contentless and that’s just not true? not everybody believes in either of these two prongs.

Lots of people, mostly not on this website, think you shouldn’t have much floor.

Lots of people, many on this website, think you should absolutely have a ceiling.

It is amazingly horrifying in how little Labour leaders have zero, even negative faith in the values that their party's supposed to stand for. I have the deepest sympathies for the party ground floor workers and supporters who're disgusted by this grotesque betrayal of their values. It's despairing.

Sorry @erictopol.bsky.social it doesn't. All participants were normal coffee drinkers. Therefore, the coffee-drinker arm is the Control arm. The intervention of going cold turkey increased the hazard of AF by 64% (100/0.61). The whole report is written from the wrong perspective.

at the bottom are bitcoin guys who watch UFC. at the top is a they/them barista with blue hair.
also, “politics is bottom/top not left/right” might work as a slogan but is shit as analysis. who is the bottom? who is the top? who constitutes an “elite” and who belongs to “the people?” these are important questions that have to be answered.

Was wondering what US state *would* be most analogous with the UK. From my distant understanding, I'd say it'd have to be one of the rust belt states, possibly Michigan due to it, AIUI, having a bit of a "faded glory" vibe. Plus, it has a higher-than-average Muslim population

The town with the worst health in England has better life expectancy than 80% of US states, which is scary when you consider what is being averaged across an entire state.

I’ve become negatively polarized into a to-the-death Harris defender partly because most of the discourse around her campaign is some variation of “she shouldn’t have spent the whole campaign saying [thing she said exactly once]”

the reporter assigned to cover epstein and his connections to trump was from the finance desk. also he was more or less on epstein's payroll.
Reporters covering Trump are not the same reporters assigned to cover the NYC mayor's race. Beat reporters have to develop sources and that takes time so you can't just switch beats with every story. So no, a reporter covering the NYC race is not going to suddenly do a Trump story, and vice versa.
So when Trump is running for president, stories about him are less newsworthy than when Mamdani is running for NYC mayor? Fascinating, continue, you're doing really well.

I, a 15-year career federal employee, am responsible for ACA subsidies being taken away.

Not the tens of millions of people who voted to give Donald Trump's Republican Party control of the American government, no, they're blameless victims. It's my fault and I should suffer for it.

fuck this shit.

You are a lost cause because you're completely wrong and everybody is telling you and you're actually incapable of doing the work clearly. You just want to say things and nothing you're saying is actually true when you're criticizing them. It's so easy to go to their pages and see all the stuff.
I am trying to be open and receptive - I've also been googling and searching for what the House Dems have been doing these last many weeks. It's really not much. So many press conferences do what? I am going to try to follow their social media accounts and amplify their messaging. 👉

the thing about bad things happening is that you only need a pretty small group of people to be complicit in them to make them happen. a LOT of horrible shit can happen without anybody getting their hands dirty with it. being non-complicit does nothing to stop harm in itself.

I'm looking at overall turnout (barely less than 2020), at polls of non-voters (they favored Trump, unlike in previous election years), at other evidence of an electorally strong Palestine movement (Uncommitted did barely better than in 2012, DNC protests were small).

and if it was effective at all in 2024 it wasnt the salience of transphobia, it’s that they launched it out of a 300mm dollar media cannon or $44.3 billion depending how you want to do the accounting on twitter
Again and again you see people claiming that Trump's "Kamala is for they/them" ad was decisive in 2024; they do so without meaningful evidence. Assertion after unproven assertion. In column after column, interview after interview.

Well, here's yet more proof--after years of the same.
